This thermometer worked perfectly the first time I used it - stuck in a thick meatloaf while it cooked in the oven. Other reviews mention the device reading wrong sitting on the counter or similar, but these are because buyers are confused by the needle, made worse by an incorrect answer to one of the questions - the long end of the needle is the correct end for reading the thermometer and points down to the right at room temperature. Since the scale starts at 120 degrees F, 70 degrees F is going to be way below that starting point. When someone states it reads about 140 degrees sitting on the counter, that's where the short end of the needle points, which is the wrong end of the needle. Many other reviewers were similarly confused by thinking the short end is the right end. I have another cheaper thermometer with a much wider range that I always felt was off by about 10 degrees F because it reads 60 degrees at room temperature. When both were placed in hot water, the cheap one read 135 degrees when this new one read 145 degrees. I would highly recommend this thermometer, but be sure to read the correct end of the needle! As has been my experience with other Taylor products, this is a solidly constructed dial thermometer. The dial measures 2 3/4" in diameter and provides easy to see readings in the range of 120°F to 212°F. The thermometer is pretty well-sealed and I have no instances where water leaked into the thermometer while it was being cleaned. I've used this primarily for oven-cooked meat dishes and the temperature readings have been pretty much on the mark. Note that proper placement of this thermometer into an appropriate spot is the key to reliable readings. Although it was a nice feature while it lasted, the red metal pointer quickly fell off and was never to be seen again. Outside of that minor setback, the thermometer performed admirably and accurately for almost a year. Recently though, the needle started spinning as the dial was rotated and had no correlation to the temperature it was supposed to measure. The silver lining to the mechanical breakdown, and the reason why I rate this thermometer so highly, is Taylor's customer service. I sent Taylor's customer service an e-mail describing the problem and asking about their warranty process. Their reply was to ask for my mailing address so they could send me a replacement and to ask that I throw away the defective thermometer. I can confidently recommend this Taylor product with four stars based on this great customer support, my prompt receipt of the replacement thermometer, and the consistent performance from this product. On first blush this appears to be a nifty thermometer. However for eight dollars, it is extremely cheaply made. Pros Inexpensive Big dial Cons Cheaply manufactured The lens feels like plastic, not glass. The metal also feels way too light -- like it may be aluminum, not steel. The little cheap blue pointer came right off when I unpacked the thermometer! I had to try to pop it back on, but even o, it's so loosely place on the dial that it doesn't stay in one place. Any movement causes it to spin around the dial. And speaking about spinning, the needle that is supposed to show the temperature, is loose as a slinky. If I move the thermometer, the needle bounces around like a ball. Up and down. The entire experience doesn't give me a lot of confidence that I'm going to get an accurate reading in the slightest. I cannot recommend. Read more
Outstanding. Like the feature that you can stick it in and leave it in the oven with the meat, and still read it. Read more

I really wanted to like this one. I bought this one and an instant read electronic one at the same time. This one has a little marker on it that kept falling off in first use. It also took quite a bit of time to start registering an accurate reading when at a lower temperature. Hands down I prefer the electronic one. We kept using the electronic one because this one didn’t feel reliable with the marker falling off and the slow beginning on accuracy. It did finally align its reading with the electronic one.... but the electronic one was accurate from cold to cooked. Read more
