Multifunctional

Multi use for terrarium, aquarium, potted plants. I put some in a freezer ice bin... got tired of the ice stuck to the bottom. With the available feet you can have all the drainage you want. Very sturdy. Read more

Gonna take a pass on these...

I appreciate the amount of panels you get for your money - in that respect, these are a good value. However, if you choose to use them, be prepared for some custom work to install uplift tubes. The panels themselves are somewhat flexible, and the locking system is imprecise, making assembly rather frustrating. My main concern, and the reason I'm probably returning them, is their smell. Odd thing to mention about an undergravel filter, right? Like, "Why are you sniffing your filter, Siorus? Don't be weird." But seriously. Siorusly, even. When I first opened the package, the smell of plasticizers and cigarette smoke erupted from the packaging and filled my room. I typically dismiss people who complain about weird smells in Amazon reviews as crackpots (and this experience won't change that), but these filter panels absolutely stink. Even after sitting on my desk for a couple of weeks in an open package, they still smell. The odor is fainter now, but unmistakable if I hold them to my nose. The plastic also has an unusual rubbery, flexible quality to it - not the rigid, brittle plastic typical of most undergravel filters. It's difficult to find a direct comparison; if you've handled other Chinese-made aquarium hardware like some no-name HOB filters, you'll recognize it instantly. It's similar to certain storage totes or thick soda bottles - the kind of plastic that turns white and bends when twisted rather than snaps. Between the smell and unusual flexibility, I became acutely aware that I have no idea about the origin of this plastic. The smell could be from a plasticizer or injection molding release agent that might be non-toxic and/or might rinse off, or it could be recycled and somehow contaminated. I think that's extremely unlikely, but when you consider both the cost of all of your plants and fish, and the time and hassle of removing an undergravel filter, particularly on a larger tank like mine, I just don't think these are worth taking that risk with. There are too many alternatives available, from name-brand UGFs to DIY options using PVC pipe. I don't see any obvious defects in the product, and they might perform fine. I just don't have a good gut feeling about this one, so mine are going back. Take that for what it's worth. Read more

Ok does what is expected

Good. You might need to glue on longer tanks and verify the correct amount. However, you can work with less and create skirts so the media does not take over the void needed. Read more

A great product

This was easy to make for my Pentagon tank and the odd angles in the front it was easy to cut them and fit them perfectly. The only problem I had is that the snap together panels are not the most effective. I got it all put together and snapped down tight and when I picked it up to put it in the tank it fell apart in three pieces I finally had to put it on a cookie sheet and slide it into place. That being said there's a learning curve but I love this product Read more

Hard to snap together...lift tube hole nearly impossible to open.

Bought this to make a substrate plenum for my new 65 gal planted aquarium. The panels and feet are firm enough to take the weight of the substrate and hardscape, and high enough to accommodate bio-media inside the plenum but.....here's why I took off a star. Maybe it should be two stars. The panels DO NOT snap together easily and DO NOT stay snapped together. It's like pushing ill-fitted puzzle pieces together. The difficulty in snapping the panels together makes it all but necessary to build it outside of the tank rather than inside the tank. But lifting the panels up resulted in ALL of them falling apart. That was frustrating. I tried gluing the snapped-together pieces but - wow - the plastic didn't bond with any of the glues I had on hand: Gorilla Super Glue = fail, PVC cement = fail, JB Weld = fail, Silicon hot glue = fail. I ended up using the thinnest zip-ties I could find and threading them through the itty-bitty holes to keep the panels together....took several hours for a 65 gal tank platform! Someone out there can build a better product. Thankfully, once it's buried under the substrate I'll never have to see it again! Addendum: Took off another star because breaking through the round holes for the lift tube is nearly impossible. Forget the scissors, not possible. Utility knife: get a supply of blades! Heated edge: barely touched it. C'mon, man. Someone build a better mousetrap! It shouldn't be this difficult!! Read more
