Another Superior Film From The 1960's

Music Loverβ€”June 27, 2024

'The Glass Bottom Boat' is one of those rare films from Hollywood in the 1960's that still stands the test of time. With an all-star ensemble cast, led by Doris Day and Rod Taylor, this romantic / comedy is good old-fashioned movie making. I remember watching this film on a television set decades ago and fell in love with the entire premise (storyline) of the movie. It has comedy, drama, action, suspense and a happy ending. Just like the films 'The Impossible Years' and 'Where the Boys Are', this film will give you an opportunity to block out today's world for the length of the movie. I have this film on VHS, standard DVD and now Blu-Ray. Sadly, most of Hollywood's attempts to recapture the old-fashioned romantic / comedies from the 1960's is lost on today's directors and studios. The film is worth every penny and definitely worthy of being in your DVD collection. Read more

Five stars for presentation

Raisuli the Magnificentβ€”May 12, 2019

Honestly I came across this film while looking for Caprice, Day's other spy sendup which she reportedly was dissatisfied with--though it aired on Sacramento TV fairly often during the summer. And having purchased the DVD thinking it was Caprice, I was kind of lukewarm to the film. It wasn't real fun but was innocent and sweet enough in its own way, and Day's revenge antics are far fetched. However, seeing it on bluray is a visual feast. The images is crystal clear like it must have been in the theatre when it debuted, and the colors are very vibrant. And for the first time in my life I could appreciate miss Day's sex appeal. I say that because I wasn't a big Doris Day fan. She represented a kind of idealistic white society female, which I didn't have a problem with, but her roles seemed wholly detached from what was happening in society at the time. That is to say as she gallivants making Glass Bottom Boat off Santa Catallina, 300 miles north at SFSU and UC Berkeley students are tearing up the campus in the name of a variety of civil rights' movements. See what I'm getting at? Even so Glass Bottom Boat is a kind of social anchor helping to prop up the more benign and pleasant aspect of an establishment that had many flaws. Now, if you can get by all that, and either you lived through and can forget the stark contrast that this film represents compared to the demonstrations and riots of the time, then this film can be a mildly pleasant romp. Rod Taylor's math is bogus, this is one of the few movie roles I ever saw Paul Lynde and Robert Martin in before TV scooped them up, and Doris acting out Taylor's delusions really showed just how versatile an actress she was. In fact it's too bad we didn't get to see her in more daring roles. It truly is because had she done more dramatic or edgy work, then films like Glass Bottom Boat may have been forgiven during the time in lieu of other more grounded work. All in all I think Glass Bottom Boat is okay, and I've finally come to appreciate Doris Day as more than just an icon for white establishment Hollywood. The characters could have been Asian, African, Native American, or, dare I say it, Russian, and I think the innocence of the female fantasy still would have held up, though perhaps with a different spin on society. It's a mainstream female fantasy film for conservative white America that, to be honest, is quite harmless and kind of fun at times. It's somewhat blasΓ© and slow, and there isn't too much humor in it, but again it's harmless. Mostly harmless, as per Douglas Adams. Read more

Doris Day Is Great

Jerry Flackβ€”March 16, 2023

Doris Day may be the most underrated and least appreciated actress in Hollywood history. Her comedies are most enjoyable. Her performances are always perfect. Her male leads range from Rock Hudson to James Garner to Rod Taylor in this classic film. The supporting cast is also very good. Her comedies from the early 1960s are especially enjoyable film fare. She must have been incredibly dedicated. She made so many great comedies. Doris Day was not only a great comic actress, she had that terrific singing voice to make her films even more delightful. This is one of her best film comedies. The added Catalina scenery is a special bonus. Read more

I forgot how good this movie is-- VERY CAMPY -- ALL STAR CAST -- Classic Film w/ Doris Day

P2 Avid Readerβ€”July 11, 2020

I had not seen this movie in AGES -- and decided to buy a copy on my Amazon Streaming Video one weekend. I sure wish Amazon Prime TV had a classic movie channel with "newer" movies like this one. Who recalls Turner Classic Movies on Cable TV?? I sure miss it!! Acting -- CAMPY FUNNY HUMOR -- all star cast -- you're going to be surprised WHO is in this movie!! Music -- well it is a Doris Day movie -- so she will sing in HER STYE of music several big numbers Quality -- the color is rich and dark, sound track will be dated -- this is a CLASSIC FILM so don't expect new tech Sexual Content -- it is flirty and has a lot of HINTS without actual uh hum sex in it -- A LOT OF ADULT TOPICS HINTED AT THOUGH Location -- NASA SPACE CENTER location -- California's Catalina Island for the boat tour -- Overall impression -- Campy 1960s ERA fun and it is interesting to observe the difference in computer technology and the language used in discussion of technology in this film. It even has a ROBOT in the house -- a high tech kitchen -- will give plenty of laughs. REMEMBER IT IS AN OLDER FILM, JUST SIT BACK AND OBSERVE and LAUGH A LOT. And the sexual revolution jokes about Catnip Widow women -- and silly men chasing Doris Day are all done in good fun -- as I said CAMPY!! Read more
