Sweet vocal jazz

big readerβ€”June 26, 2014

This is old school jazz at it's finest. When an artist went into the studio, in a little vocal booth facing the conductor, with a live orchestra playing in the big room. Everyone doing the music together. No punching in to fix something. It's like a live performance. All at once, top to bottom. Ah, the magic of that is amazing. Some people out there still do it that way. Not much. Too tempting to go back in and " fix " a vocal glitch. And again. And again. And you lose something in all that fixing. There's just something crazy good about facing the mic and becoming a member of the orchestra that way in that moment, and Mr. Rankin had an enormous gift for it. This album is special and there's nothing else like it out there. He takes these standards and turns them inside out till you want to cry. "You Are So Beautiful" is a good example. I hate that he's gone. God bless him. Read more

My favorite album ever.

Michael J. Tollifsonβ€”March 10, 2013

This is about my 6th purchase of this album. I have two myself, and have bought two for my Mom, one for my Grandmother, and one for my sister. I used to make cassette tapes of "the album", as we call it in my family. I remember it coming out in the mid '70s. I have over 3,000 CDs, tapes, albums, MP3 albums. But THIS is my FAVORITE album of all time, any genre. I have almost everything he's recorded, and this is the best. Don Costa producing w/the orchestra, terrific. Songs by Hank Sr., Beatles, standard tunes, The Young Rascals, Stephen Bishop, etc. Kenny can sing any artist's song and make it his own, better than any other artist I know. This is a must buy for anyone who likes Kenny at all, and/or loves jazz, crooners, or just great singers. It doesn't get better than this. Paul McCartney asked Kenny to accept the songwriter Hall of Fame award for Paul and John when he heard about receiving the award. He had liked an earlier Kenny recording of a Beatles' tune (Blackbird), on another Kenny album. I saw him twice, and met him once. This guy can sing! Read more

The product was just as advertised. There has been no better singer ever born. When it comes to crooning and love songs he's the best. Read more

No voice like Kenny Rankin's

monkuboyβ€”August 7, 2010

I first heard Kenny Rankin way back in 1973 when I purchased his "Like a Seed" LP. I played it over and over. I liked the material on it but what really made it distinctive was his wonderful voice. It was just so soothing, mellow and expressive and I've never heard anyone who sings like him. I purchased the Kenny Rankin Album back in 1976 or 1977 when it was released and it contains more of the same. Lush arrangements, a very well-chosen set of songs, and the best part, listening to Mr. Rankin sing them. The recording quality on the CD is very good; I highly recommend this. Read more

Soft and Silky

PDXTOMCTβ€”March 31, 2003

This is one of thse albums you can get addicted to without even realizing it. When I was in college I listened to it over and over while writing papers and doing other "brain work." The covers of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and The Rascals' "Groovin'" are amazing. There are many more great songs, but those are the highlights for me. Rankin's voice is smooth and effortless. I suppose the rap on this album, if there is one, is that it's overproduced and syrupy. The strings are a bit contrived at times. That's why I can't give it a perfect score. Still, it's well worth having in any decent 70s soft rock collection. Read more
