A comfortable bag for comfortable temperatures

Zipped, It’s super roomy all the way down with what looks to be a pretty drafty zipper. There is a draft baffle but out of the box it’s blocky and can settle out of position. The stuff sack is super burly & also huge. I’m not a fan of the single compression strap design either. I keep my bags hanging to maintain insulation loft, so I will almost certainly use a different stuff sack when taking this bag out. This bag is a little too warm to nap in fully zipped at 65 degrees F but it’s fine to use as a quilt on the couch watching TV. 20 degrees though?… Doubtful. …so I swept the snow off my deck, puffed up a pad and took the bag & pillow out “for science” & attempted to nap. It was 18 & sunny, with a light breeze, and sure enough I was pretty uncomfortable pretty fast and starting to stiffen after 40 minutes. No nap for me. For comparison I have a 10-Year old Kelty 20 degree down bag for winter camping that is insufferably warm over 50, cozy down to 32 but gets pretty cool much below that. It’s also pretty tight in the shoulders, hips & legs and the zipper is almost magically air-tight. That bag & this one are diametrically opposed (but cost about the same). I think this bag would suit a 2-season camper (spring, fall) who doesn’t like the fast wear, claustrophobia or constantly hanging zippers of typical back-country bags aimed at people who really care about weight. Based on how the bag “feels” at 65 & 18 deg, I personally feel I’d be comfortably warm on a pad with a base layer down to possibly 45 or even maybe 40 degrees, and up to room temperature I might be a little warm but tolerably so. If you want a durable spring & summer bag that is easy to live with and you don’t care so much about how much it weighs or how much room it takes up, this is a good choice. It’s also not a bad over quilt for hammock campers in that same 45-60 degree low temps band. Read more

Great Value from a trusted brand

The North Face Stormbreak 20 is one of those sleeping bags that just… does its job. No drama, no fancy hype—just reliable warmth when you crawl in at the end of a long day outside. It uses synthetic insulation, which means if things get damp (because weather loves chaos), you’re still warm instead of shivering and questioning your life choices. It’s rated for cold nights, and while it’s not magic, it definitely holds its own in spring, summer, and fall camping. The center zipper is a surprisingly great feature. Getting in and out doesn’t feel like wrestling yourself into a burrito, and the hood cinches down nicely to keep heat in when temperatures drop. The quilting has a little stretch too, which side sleepers will appreciate—no fighting the bag every time you roll over. This bag is solid for camping, trekking, bike trips, or any adventure where you want dependable warmth without paying top-shelf prices. It’s not the smallest or lightest thing you’ll ever pack—synthetic insulation is a bit bulkier than down—but it makes up for that by handling moisture way better. Bottom line: great value from a trusted brand, comfortable in multiple sleeping positions, and tough enough for real-world camping. Not an ultralight dream bag, but a very dependable one when you want warmth without stress. Read more

True to North Face quality

The media could not be loaded. Anything North Face puts out is generally a high quality product and this bag is no different. There are a lot of details and special touches that have been carefully planned and implemented. The storage bag is well made with a cover flap over the opening so your bag is protected and there are adjustable straps that can be used to attach to a pack or make carrying easier. It is lightweight, has tie down loops sewn in and is soft with a rating to 20 degrees F. I could not test this limit unfortunately as we have had unseasonable highs where I live and it hasn't dipped below 28 even at night (I didn't want to wait any longer to provide my review). That being said, it was plenty warm to withstand that temp with plenty of room in the standard to accommodate my 5'9" self. If you're over 6' you will need the long. It repels water nicely although is not waterproof so don't set up camp in a puddle. The zipper has a nice pull, has smooth action and reinforcements and there is a small wallet sized pocked inside under a flap. I liked that it wasn't as restricting to leg movement as some and I also liked the locking ties of the hood. The only caveat I would add is that the liner material is relatively loud with movement that the outer shell does not have. I tried to capture it with the video. I did not feel the noise made this bag less than a 5 star bag however. I find this to be a very good value. Read more
