Before I begin I want to state I am a frequent rice eater. I make rice usually 5 days out of the week. I cook different types of rice. This is also not my first Tiger rice cooker. My previous Tiger rice cooker finally had the liner scratch and de-laminate after a decade and it made sense to get a new one. I unfortunately, couldn't buy a new liner. I am deeply disappointed in the degrading of the Tiger rice cooker line. Tiger rice cookers have in general, compared to other eastern-on-the-western-market style rice cookers, produced a more al-dente sweet rice. This I prefer, as it is easier to simply add a few millimeter more to get fluffier rice. The settings for "plain" rice cooks jasmine and other medium to long grain rice perfectly. Tiger rice cookers in terms of fuzzy logic, time, and temperature, work perfectly. You will get excellent rice, every time, and in a shorter amount of time doing it on a conventional stove. For the busy home that enjoys rice, this is a must-have appliance. There is not really any meaningful difference between Tiger cookers other than settings. If you desire press-and-forget-it level of rice cooking ease, this is a far better choice than the Tiger A1xU series. But that one if you are willing to troubleshoot and play with water levels and times, will likely work. But this one is far easier to use, by far. But the programming hasn't changed in ten years. To be fair, it hasn't needed to. But here are no upgrades in this rice cooker compared to past models. The issues mostly come down to quality of materials. Compared to my previous cooker, the corners were clearly cut in both design and materials. - There is no longer a removable upper plate, making cleaning of the upper part of the rice cooker harder. - The top lid is no longer a cohesive solid piece of plastic, meaning grime gets in the seams after a few weeks, and makes cleaning harder. - The top lid steam area keeps too much moisture in, and gets clogged easily (again, issue with cleaning) - the plastic is cheaper quality and stains faster. - The open tab has a visible spring and is made cheaper than previous models. - The membrane push button pad is a clear downgrade from physical buttons, and due to it being a high-heat cooker, it's starting to soften the glue and melt, causing the membrane to sink. - The carry handle seems like a dumb addition. Is it really that hard to carry? - The side tab no longer exists for holding the rice paddle, and they added this dumb base plate, which is frankly, ugly, instead of remolding a new rice paddle. Or adding the handle on the side like they used to have. - The internal metal liner and cook surface is clearly a worse quality metal than models ten years ago. - Far uglier overall design choice going forward from models on display This is a difficult review to write because it cooks rice. It cooks rice REALLY WELL, especially once you remove the black stupid thing from the top. Tiger in my opinion, when they do it right, make the best rice cookers on the market. But I guess competition and cheapening have made them decide that releasing this sub-par model on the market is the way to go. It also is ugly. Tiger has a very easy way forward to dominate the rice cooker market but they continue to blunder. Other companies are filling the gaps. - Release models with stainless steel liners. - Bring back the JAJ model series, for the love of god. - Make the larger series look like the beloved JAJ series. - Put old JNP models in the past, where they belong, save large models for restaurants. - Streamline the microcomputer series and get rid of the 'egg' style. - Put cable tabs on the back. If you buy this rice cooker, it will do its job. It will make rice. It will make rice really well. Just keep in mind that it isn't built well. You will have to clean it gently. I will expect the membrane style buttons to fail first. I'm at the point where a good rice cooker I would have been willing to have spent quite a bit more on. But the true option came down to the difference of cooking between Sweet and Plain, which is why I stuck with Tiger. Hopefully their future offerings will be an improvement. Read more
