Tilley T5MO IS Fantastic!

I am not a hat guy, but have to say I love this hat. I got the Tilley T5MO. I used the guidance for sizing, it turned out perfect. Nice, light weight, enough of a rim but not too big. Pretty cool looking and functional. Read more

Love the hat but it was put together with top, body, and brim all out of line with each other. Drove me crazy. (UPDATED)

I first want to say that this is a 5 star hat except for it seemed like a factory second with regard to construction. I'll deal with the positive first: The hat is exactly what I've been looking for but failed to find in cheaper options. It feels amazingly good, like an old loved hat I've had for years even though it's brand new. That cotton is just amazing. The fit is loose like is recommended by the maker, and that's a good thing. I didn't understand at first, but when I put it on then I understood. It doesn't flop around loosely, but sits there gently. I'm not sure how they do that, but it's really loose and secure at the same time. The straps are the best I've seen in any hat. They're easy and the hat would stay on in tropical storm winds, I'm pretty sure. The brim is adequate and not quite as big as some, and it's firm enough to stay put in wind. That said, the brim doesn't get in the way of my car seat headrest while I'm driving. The brim just sort of conforms back there comfortably and I don't even notice it. The other things like the pocket and water resistance are good as well. So why, you ask, do I rate the hat 3 stars? I tried wearing the hat for a couple of days and it just about drove me crazy the way the top was put on off center to the brim. I thought at first that I could just deal with it because it's so nice in every other way, but I just can't. When I put it on completely straight on my head, then the front and rear top portions where the vent is were off slightly to my right. By "slightly" I mean that the front of the vent would line up with the corner of my eye instead of the center of my nose. The front of the brim where it extends the most and has the most visible lines of stitching is off to the left by about the same amount - lining up with the corner of my left eye. I really did try to tolerate it and thought I could, but after a couple of days I realize it will drive me crazy. A $95 hat should not drive me crazy with a defect in craftsmanship. I do still love everything else about the hat and I also see all the positive reviews so I'm returning this one and ordering a replacement in hopes it will be put together straight. I'm thankful that Amazon has such an easy return process. I will definitely update the star rating accordingly if the replacement hat is better quality. UPDATE: Two days later I now have my replacement hat. It's still not perfect, but the alignment of sections is much better and within my margin of tolerance. I'm still not giving a full 5 stars since it's still not perfect, this shouldn't have happened in the first place, and my Tilley experience hasn't been without hassle. I've also noticed that my review wasn't the only one over several years that spoke of this same quality control issue. I do however think I'll still love the hat going forward, and I'm happy I purchased it. As a side note, this time the hat was shipped by Amazon in only an envelope and stuffed in my mailbox with all the other mail. It took me a while to work out the resulting deformities. C'mon Amazon . You're usually better than that. Read more

Best hat in the known universe

Throw all those other hats away (you know the ones I'm talking about!) this is the only hat you'll use after you get it. Go to a store with a good selection and try on lots of them, then you'll get a better feel for the size. They feel looser than other hats but after you wear it for a while you'll wonder why all hats aren't like this. I wanted the T5MO which is kind of rare so I determined my size at the store then ordered from Amazon. The retention strings take some getting used to but after they're adjusted properly they're genius. Just pay the extra money and get the best hat out there--you won't regret it. Read more

First tilley hat. Great quality.

First tilley hat TMO5 Khaki/olive 7 1/2. Great quality, no flaws that I can see. The color to me seems to be a light grey. The material to me seems very light in weight, but I have no doubt it will hold up over time. Product arrived ahead of schedule. OutlandUSA.com, thank you. Read more

Size matters

I had a similar product where ‘large’ was a bit tight, but the next size up was too loose. Enter the Tilley graduated sizing. I took a measurement of my head using a piece of paper, and once that was measured out, compared to their size chart. Found out the larger of the two large sizes was what I wanted. Hat is very comfortable to wear. It will also pack flat in a suitcase, ready for use at your destination. Read more

It's a Tilley, but...

I was given my first Tilley as a birthday present almost 20 years ago. It was time for a new one. I like the ventilation, and was looking for one made of cotton, rather than nylon that seems to be ubiquitous these days. I had read that the nylon Tilleys were made in China, rather than Canada. I figured if I bought a cotton Tilley it would be made in Canada. Nope. It seems Canada has followed America's lead, and is offshoring their production. As for the hat itself, it's not the cotton duck I was expecting, it's a different weave with 2% spandex for some reason. It still has the dual straps, which I can attest is a good feature. Do yourself a favor and find a Tilley size chart, measure your head, and heed the instructions to add 1-2 cm to your head measurement, then find your size on the chart. Otherwise, you may end up with a hat that's too small. Read more

Works as advertised

Fits perfectly and this is the first "cooling hat" that actually works. It was 85 degrees the other day with 100% sun and moderately to high humidity and I felt the slightest breeze through the hat and never needed to wipe away the perspiration while I played four hours of golf. Thank you. Read more

Love the hat but hard to size for me.

This is my second Tilley. The previous one was the LTM6 7 3/8 and it's a little tight, so I got this one in a 7 1/2 and it's a little loose. Oh well. :) Love the hat though!! Read more
