Excellent HDD Purchase

Mr MartiniSeptember 29, 2025

Occasionally noisy, but excellent 7200RPM storage for a good (sale) price, great for gaming installs and video data. Still working great after several years, highly recommend. Read more

Some noise but definitely reliable!

egyptianbmanDecember 17, 2020

I've bought many, many hard drives through the years and the X300 line is generally my go-to for hard drives. I've found them to be *much* more reliable than most other brands. I put these hard drives through a considerable amount of constant read/write and they keep up! They do make a noise when the drives are busy (I want to say the noise is only during writes) but I find the noise nostalgic and it's nice to have an auditory confirmation that my system is "doing work". I think my favorite thing about these drives is that they are just reliable. I have several of these drives that have been quite literally working their butts off for 6 years now and they're still going strong! Read more

Two years of reliability, so I bought more

Dan AmrichDecember 4, 2020

For me, WD has been reliable but the most expensive, and Seagate has been cheaper but unreliable. So when faced with the two traditional options, I went for option three -- Toshiba. I bought a 4TB 128MB Toshiba drive about two years ago and it's been a champ for me -- great performance, great reliability, excellent value -- which is why I came back for the 8TB 256MB version for an additional storage drive. I am happy with a CrystalDiskMark6 score of 204/193 on the 8TB drives, and even the older 4TB is delivering 150/143 after two years of daily access (it's my games drive). But I will join the choir in noting that the 8TB drive is quite audible when seeking/defragmenting, at least compared to non-Toshiba drives. Whatever other companies are doing to quiet their drives, Toshiba is not; you will hear that distinctive rumble during operation. But you have to know there's going to be a trade-off at such a lower price point. Where this drive does not skimp is performance; that's what I wanted, along with saving a few bucks. The noisy performance is an acceptable compromise, you can get a quality drive for a good price,. Read more

Great HDD

jedAugust 10, 2022

We've had this drive for a few years now. For us, though it's a backup drive behind a SSD. With this configuration, it works great. Many people don't game as we do though. I feel that most other purposes (business or school for instance) would be just fine from the reliable 7200 rpm HDD. In fact, I think a lot of games would perform just fine too. Unless you're "really" on a crunch budget I wouldn't recommend anything slower than a 7200 though. Read more

Stay cool and performs well

ACW1120October 22, 2021

I use HGST hard drives all the time; they are excellent and reliable; this is the first time I have used a Toshiba drive; it is an old brand; I installed it as a backup drive; it is pretty; I don't have the reliability data yet, but will report back. 2022-11-1 Both drives last me more than a year in a NAS environment 24x7; I hope they continue to function well; if there is any problem, I will report it. Don't buy HDWR180XZSTA especially from Amazon

sdSeptember 21, 2021

Don't buy those drives, there are some manufacturing problems with the recent 8TB Toshiba drives PN:HDWR180XZSTA{U} . I had relatively good experience with several of 8TB Toshiba drives bought from 2018 till 2020, but the latest 2 drives that I bought (August 12) were somewhat flaky from the beginning, I installed them in USB enclosure and it took longer for them to be recognized. I didn't pay attention to this as smartmon tests were fine. I moved the disks to internal SATA and everything seemed to be fine for about a month when suddenly bios reported that one of the drives is failing and needs to be replaced immediately. The smartmon showed that Seek_Error_Rate is at 31 well below the 50 threshold. The short or long smartmon tests gave "unknown failure". For the second drive the Seek_Error_Rate is above threshold but also less than 100. Of course, this happened on a day 32 since the purchase. I contacted Amazon but barely English speaking guy started explaining that as it is over 30 days I should contact Toshiba and connected me to another barely English speaking guy from Toshiba who was trying to find out what kind of dryer I have, the Amazon support genius connected me to the wrong department. As I was not interested in this kind of "support" from Amazon, I hang up and I went to Toshiba myapps.taec.toshiba.com site and tried to RMA the falling drive and get a replacement. And I got this email several days later: "Please be aware that you will not receive a replacement unit. We do not replace this product line. The amount of the refund will be the lower amount of either your purchase price or the current Toshiba sales price." What a service from both Amazon and Toshiba. My advice, stay away from both Amazon and Toshiba with this level of support and quality. Read more

Not bad

PogChampAugust 25, 2020

I guess I'm the first to review this version. One of my older HDDs was dying and I needed more space so I went with this. Performance is great, but its a little noisy. I was lucky enough to get everything off the dying HDD instead of having to use a backup so I put it through some serious work on its first day and it held up. With most HDDs, problems don't arise until later. I will update the review if it dies, but so far so good. Read more
