This umbrella has a push button that makes it a snap to open and close. One push and it pops open. One push and the canopy folds close. But also be aware that the umbrella doesn’t retract on its own. You need to use two hands ( or one hand and your hip) to pull the canopy section back to the base. This manual action resets the springs so the umbrella is once again ready to open with the push button. I’m not a frail person, but I found it took a little bit of effort to pull the canopy back to the base. So this is not an umbrella you want to give to a child or an elderly person. Another problem is the Velcro strap that holds the umbrella closed – it is just not long enough. It is a struggle to twist and compress the fabric and ribs enough to secure the two ends of the Velcro. It really needs to be 1/2 inch longer. But I do like the water shedding coating on the fabric. The water just beads up and rolls off the fabric. No more messy puddles of water on the floor of my car. The umbrella is also a nice size both when open and closed. It is small and light enough to carry around in my backpack (you never know when it is going to rain), and large enough to offer protection from the heaviest downpour. Read more
This is a good pocket umbrella that has both some really cool things, and some frustrating things at the same time. The Good: 1) It feels sturdy. Some umbrellas you think right out of the box they’re gonna blow away at the first strong wind. This one isn’t like that. Having said that, no umbrella will stand up to a hurricane type wind, but unless you’re Al Roker reporting outside when you really shouldn’t be, you’re good. 2) I do love the push button aspect of it. You push the one button at the bottom and it extends out and then opens. A lot of older school umbrellas will go up, but they you have to twist them in a circle to get them to open here. This is not a thing to do here. Push the button again when open, and the top part will close. That’s cool. 3) You can actually get the thing back inside the sleeve it came in from the original packaging. Most umbrellas I’ve ever owned came with them, but you could NEVER get them that small again. This can - but requires you use the velcro strip, which I talk about below. The Bad: Nothing on this is truly AWFUL, but these items wouldn’t be right listing in the “good” section. 1) The pushbutton to “close” will close the umbrella from being open, but it won’t retract down to the bottom. You have to manually push that. Some of the other reviews here say it “takes some effort”. That’s accurate, it’s not super easy to push down, but it’s not like it takes Arnold Schwarzenegger to do it either. 2) This does *NOT* cover two people, unless they’re midgets or something. I’m a full grown adult (6 feet tall), and this comfortably covers my head and shoulders. If someone else tried getting under here, one of us is getting fairly wet, as there’s no room for side by side here at all. 3) This one is probably the only true “Bad” here. When you get the umbrella retracted, there’s a velcro strip that goes around it and keeps it in its smaller form. Problem here is the velcro strip is just a tad too short. You have to really stretch it to get it all the way around the umbrella and closed. If it were just a half inch (or even 1/4) longer, it wouldn’t be such a struggle. I really wish there was more here for that. Other Notes: The push button/auto open aspect does mean you have to have it in the right spot when you push the button. Basically if you’re trying to stay dry getting out of the car, it has to have clearance, or it will try fully opening inside the car, which could have implications depending on where you’re holding it. In the end, it’s a good pocket umbrella. The non retract from open isn’t a real problem, would probably require some sort of motor to do that, which would mean more bulk, and definitely more cost. Not really designed for more than one person, but I suppose in an emergency, could keep two people’s heads (not much more) dry. Good pickup. Read more
