The size chart recommended a smaller size, but I’m glad I went with the XL for my 9-year-old — it fits and looks perfectly. My son is making the jump from kid-style undies, to boxer briefs. He's on the small side and skinny for his age (60 lbs soaking wet), and we bought size Small. They were just snug enough to fit properly, and not too tight. He say's they feel "funny" but are comfortable. He prefers wearing these when playing soccer. Also, he likes the dark colors and camo.
