I've always kept jump starters in our cars. Up until recently, they were those large bulky things that contained lead-acid batteries, and had to be plugged into a 120v outlet to charge. The problem with those things is that lead-acid batteries only last a few years before the won't hold a charge, and only the most expensive of these chargers had replaceable batteries. So, my goal is to replace those old-style jump starters with these newer, smaller ones with Li-ion batteries in all my vehicles. This jump starter is my third one, completing the change-over. Out of all three jump starters, at the moment this is my favorite one, for the following reasons. One, it comes in a really nice case. Two, it has nice fold-out handles on the front. Three, it has a very bright fold out multipurpose light on the back. Fourth, it has a 12v cigarette-lighter output, something I'll probably never need but you never know. In terms of power, this claims 7000A peak output. I have another one that claims 8000A peak output, and a third at 2000A. How much is enough to start a passenger car or SUV? Honestly, I have no idea, and I don't have any vehicles with dead batteries to test with. I think the condition of the vehicle's battery has a lot to do with it. Even with my old lead-acid jump starter, which had a hefty battery, it was unable to start someone's car that I was trying to help. When AAA finally came, they started it in seconds, but with a much larger jump starter of course. So, who knows. You just hope these things will work when you need them. I filled up a low tire on my SUV with this; it was at 24 and I filled it to 36 and the battery indicator remained at four bars. Hardly an exhaustive test, but I would make sure you top off the battery every time you use this. Most cars nowadays have USB charging ports, so you can just plug it in while you're driving and keep it topped off. You can also use this as a power bank, but I'm not sure I'd recommend that. You don't want to be using this to power your phones during a day at the beach, and then you find your vehicle needs a jump and you've depleted the battery. In an emergency if your phone is dead and you need road service, it's a good feature to have, but don't use this for a general-purpose power bank unless you have a reliable way of charging it up before you hit the road. Bottom line, this is a pretty impressive unit. It's not cheap, but it's near the upper range in terms of output power, and it will be worth its weight in gold if you're stuck somewhere with a dead battery. Admittedly, that's hard to do with modern vehicles as most will turn off lights before they can drain the battery, but it still can happen. Read more
