Very good

It was easy to format and install Ubuntu 9.10 on this drive. It's very fast and quiet. Picasa imported 49,000 photos at top speed. It's currently storing 60 GiB with no errors. The drive was healthy with no bad sectors. It passed the extended self test. All SMART data was in the green. Packaging was a simple cardboard box, but it had folded cardboard spacers to center and hold the drive half an inch from the top and bottom, 1 inch from the sides, and 1.5 inches from the front and back. Amazon shipped it in a larger box with an air cushion. The drive had a well sealed anti static bag. I'm very happy with the product. It made a good first impression. I'm using Ubuntu's file encryption and everything still feels fast. It's working well with a first generation SATA motherboard. I didn't need to add any jumper. It appears to fly along at top system speed. Read more

Durable, quiet, and good value

That is what I've learned to expect from Western Digital HD's over the years. They're the only HD's I'll buy anymore. I've seen or experienced personally problems with every other kind by now... never with a WD. I consider them the tanks of hard drives. I use a tool called "Western Digital Data Lifeguard" to do a true format and write zeros to every sector of the HD before doing a reformat and throwing the operating system on the HD. I find my box is more responsive when done this way. Read more

Not for beginners

This is a bare bones drive- no cables, no cd, nothing. So if you have never installed a hard drive before do your research first and buy a sata cable. Amazon seemed to take their time shipping this item. All that being said I have used the drive for a month and it appears to be functioning well. It is quiet and I have had no crashes or any problems of that sort. I am using this drive with Windows Xp 32 bit and have it separated into two partitions. So far so good. Read more

100% satisfied by this drive. *WARNING : you need to purchase a SATA drive cable* Easy to install into computer. If you have windows xp you would have to activate the drive from memory management. Besides that is has a great amount of space (actual space is 230GB) and is very fast. Definetly recommend this product to those who need either a cheap yet fast master drive or just need a little extra room for those games and movies. Read more
