gray/black Meetion BTM007 mouse WAS: an excellent product with a big flaw NOW UPDATED: an excellent product (flaw fixed!) REVIEW SHOULD NOW BE 5 STARS !!! pros: - very nice design, high quality feel. - buttons click just right. - metallic scroll wheel with a very nice feel, and side scrolling that feels better than on my Logitech M720 Triathlon scroll wheel. - you can configure DPI from 800 to 2400. - you can turn the ugly led light off. - the device will remember the above settings after power off, yay! this is more than what my logitech mechanical keyboard can say for itself. - it also remembers to which device it was last connected before powering off! details like these make all the difference. - it connects instantly, both over bluetooth and proprietary protocol. cons: - no space to rest little finger. - grey part is painted on. will probably eventually fade. - scroll wheel is not of the "infinite scroll" type, if you like that. - scroll wheel is not of the hi-res/precision type (only a few big brand mice have this function). power saving behavior: after about maybe 15 minutes of no motion, the motion sensor turns off. at this point the mouse enter into deep power save and moving it will not wake it up. other mice keep the sensor on so you can shake it to wake it up, but this strategy uses much more power during sleep. on this mouse, you need to click any button instead. from this moment, no matter how they were woken up, all mice start the wireless reconnection process which takes some time, so no mouse can forward events to the PC (such as motion) while reconnection takes place. on this mouse, the process is very fast and takes about half a second via bluetooth (RF dongle might be faster). the click to used to wake up the mouse is of course not forwarded to the PC. privacy: bluetooth traffic should be reasonably encrypted as per the BT standards. however, proprietary dongle traffic should be assumed NOT to be encrypted and thus be vulnerable to snooping by a nearby malicious actor or device. more worryingly, it should also be assumed to be vulnerable to spoofing, in which case a nearby malicious actor could remotely control you mouse pointer. this is generally the case for most input devices, and is a strong reason to prefer wired keyboards (which carry your typed passwords) over proprietary protocol RF devices. BT might be safe, assuming the devices actually use cryto-strength random number generators, which is a very big if. the short version: if worried, prefer using BT over the included RF dongle. if really worried, use a wired mouse. SECOND EDIT: an update transparently pushed to my linux systems made them all work with the mouse, so the following flaw no longer applies. it is conceivable that the firmware within the mouse deviates in some small way from the standards, and that caused the issue. whatever the cause, the linux guys picked up on the issue and solved it. NO LONGER APPLIES, HERE FOR HISTORICAL CONTEXT ONLY: big flaw: - i tested connecting via bluetooth to Windows and Android, and works great. unfortunately it is unable to connect to Linux 22 at least on Cinnamon desktop (based on Ubuntu 24.04). i never had this issue happen before on linux. this clearly shows that the device is doing SOMETHING wrong with the BT protocols, although it does not show up as an issue on the other OSes. this is probably because the developers never tested against linux, and just stopped implementing stuff when it started working on those major OSes. (but a bug in the BT protocol means that at any time, with any OS update, the mouse *could* stop working with the new OS version. this is theoretically possible, but of course very unlikely to happen.) there are no firmware updates for this device that could fix this. i will contact Meetion and ask for more info about this issue. FIRST EDIT: Meetion support replied immediately and were very nice. they confirmed the interoperability issue with Linux, said there is no firmware update to fix it, and suggested i returned the item to amazon. all in all a good product with good and honest support behind it. in no way they wasted time or tried to hide or deflect the issue. kudos to them for that. i am looking forward to their next gen, linux compatible hardware, and will surely try the brand again when the time comes. Mouse is light. The clicker buttons are quiet. Great feature about the scroller is the left and right scroller. Very helpful for work. You can connect with USB or bluetooth. LED light is cool. Overall, I like the mouse. One advice is probably buy a mouse pad with smoother surface. Because the cursor getting laggy on my wooden table and it doesn't work well with my current mousepad.
