I bought this because we had someone stealing at the office and I wanted a simple way to keep an eye on my desk without it looking like a camera. The idea was that it would just sit there like a normal digital clock and blend into the workspace. I set it on my desk like any other clock and used it for monitoring during the day, checking clips and alerts from my phone. It was easy to keep in place since it doesn’t look like “security gear” at a glance, so it didn’t change how my desk normally looks. The first thing I noticed though is the size. It’s tiny, and not in a sleek, modern way. It honestly looks like a little alarm clock you’d see in a kid’s room, and that felt like the one thing that could tip someone off if they’re paying attention. On the feature side, it did what I needed. Motion alerts came through to my phone like they were supposed to, and the video quality was clear enough to be useful. I also tried it in lower light and the night vision worked, so it wasn’t just a daytime-only gadget. After using it, my take is the camera part performs well, but the weirdly small clock design undercuts the “blends in” goal. If you want a clock camera that functions the way it’s supposed to, this one worked great for me. I'm very picky when it comes to electronics and cameras. I have several cameras around my home, and there are a few things I look for when first setting them up. The first thing is the app that goes with the camera itself, including all of the features within the app. Next is the quality of the video. Lastly, which seems like it should be first, is the quality of the device itself. I will do my best to accurately express my opinion about all three. First, the device we set this up on was a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus. My son, who is 11 years old, set it up and decided not to use the instructions. I sat right next to him and watched him figure it out, and it didn't take too long. So, I would say that the setup process is fairly easy. After he connected the camera to the app, I went through the settings to see how many options there were for customizing preferences. The app is very basic. I would have preferred more options for selecting the default storage for recordings. When you try to play back videos or watch still shots, you don't quite know exactly where the files are being stored. I installed a micro SD card, but there were recordings already stored in the app that I am not sure if they are on the phone itself or if there is some memory in the camera before installing the micro SD card. The app, of course, tries to get you to subscribe to cloud service, but I never do that. When you go to the playback part of the app, it will say there is no recording available, but there's another place you have to go within the app to find the recordings, and this was my biggest no-no for this whole situation. The picture quality is also meh. You have two options: one for 4K and one for 1080. That's it. So, of course, I chose the 4K, and while the 4K is better than the 1080, it is still fairly low quality compared to the standard image quality that we now experience on our devices. I had the camera on in a fairly well-lit room, and it was still not the greatest. But for the purpose of why we're using this, it will still work. The quality of the device itself seems fine, but it was much smaller than I thought it was going to be. It's about the size of a deck of cards. When you first open the box and look at the device, you will notice that the camera lens is very obvious; they did include a tinted camera lens cover window that also covers the infrared lights. In my opinion, this is an 'ok' camera. The picture quality during the day is fine, but at night, it's a little too dark to really make anything out. You'd be able to tell that someone was there, but 'who' it actually is might be of concern. It does have the ability to zoom in, but it just gets blurry when you do that. Setting it up was very easy - just download and open the app. There are a few pretty neat functions inside of the app. You could either set your notifications, and see when there's movement in the house (not my favorite option) or you could do a constant record, and then watch the playback later. It has a motion detect feature (best used when notifications are on). You can choose to listen to what's going on in the room - the audio is fairly decent. The camera is on in both of the pictures that I shared. You have the option to have the display on or off. I did both, and the camera is still fully functional. It comes with two faceplates; the one that I have on now is pure black. With the display off, nobody would even know that it's a camera or even that the clock is on. The other faceplate is clear, so you can see all of the lights at the bottom and the camera lens. The third picture that I shared is of the infrared at night. The only light that's on in that room is coming from the computer, and it's not bright at all. The only reason why I deducted a star is because of the notification setting. I turned it on, and I think it picked up every piece of dust that flew by. I had the camera pointing away from me, and my dog was sitting behind me at the time. The notifications went off about 6 times in less than five minutes. There was nothing there. Nothing was moving, and I couldn't figure out what it could possibly have been picking up. I think it's a little overpriced for what it is, and I'll probably only use it to check on the dog if I go out of town for the night, which rarely happens. Read more
