Not a bad player but...

The player itself is flawless. I have always enjoyed LG Electronics items, and that's what this item is. It plays all store bought DVD's and anything my friends and I can burn for school projects. Biggest flaw however is that the remote stopped working on the DVD, and now only controls my Phillips TV. Not sure how to fix it or what happened to it. Now I am unable to get through menus. Will update as I find a solution to the problem. **Update** Contact support for this product. I was instructed to go the a local LG Electronics service center to have my DVD player serviced. When I responded to the email that I had no problem with the player just the remote, I received the same automated response. Haven't gone to a service center yet, but plan on doing so. I have found that with a Universal Remote, I am able to get through the menus using the numeric keys... not the best, but working for now. Read more

Great DVD Player

This is the 4th standalone DVD player I have owned and it is very good. It is super slim and has an excellent picture and features for the money. it would work great with any high-end projection TV as it has progressive scan and can be set to play in wide screen aspect too. I have it connected to a 32" TV with just the standard av jacks and the picture is still superb so consider that as your benchmark. And, this unit will play DVD+RW/R discs without any trouble either! I just burned my first disc on my new Cendyne burner that I installed in my PC and it played flawlessly on this Zenith unit. I highly recommend this player if you want a good single disc player with a great picture that can also play discs you have burned yourself. Read more

Solid DVD Player

I bought this player after having a bad experience with the similarly priced JVC XV-N40BK player. The JVC had audio and visual problems so I returned it. So far the Zenith player has worked out perfectly. I'm using it with an RF modulator and I've had no problems whatsoever. The sound and picture are fine. I've watched Disney and other store-bought DVDs and I'm satisfied with the performance. I haven't tried burned DVDs yet so I wasn't comfortable giving it 5 stars. But for $70, I'm perfectly happy with this player. Read more

Well, at least it has progressive scan

I got this player to upgrade my old DVD player and get beautiful progressive scan capability. The support for MP3/JPG/DVD-R was an extra bonus--I hoped. Well, I haven't done an A/B comparison with my old player, comparing interlaced with progressive, but it clearly wasn't earth shatteringly different. Watching JPG slideshows is PAINFULLY (and ridiculously) slow, even on the fastest setting. I made a DVD-R disc full of MP3's ripped from my CD collection. That works. So, the fancy features are there, and do work after a fashion. What about just sitting down and watching a movie (this is a DVD player, after all). Certainly, the picture is clear and sharp, with fewer jaggies or flickering lines you're used to seeing with the composite video of yesteryear. But, too many times this player has failed me. Some discs won't play at all, but when I pull out my old Toshiba, they play fine. The audio regularly gets out of sync with the video--very disconcerting. There is no excuse for this kind of failure. I hoped to used Zenith's "Upgradeable Software" feature, but their technical support site has no mention of it, or any kind of upgrades for that matter. Finally, some buttons are very slow to respond. I guess Zenith was trying to save you from accidentally performing functions, so they make you press and hold the buttons (on the player itself as well as the remote) for up to 1 second before anything happens. This can be particularly annoying when fast forwarding/rewinding. If you don't hold the button long enough, you'll do a whole chapter skip. Please, Zenith, add the two more buttons to distinguish between fast forward and chapter skip! Depending on what you are looking for, however, this player may still be a good choice. If you don't mind its flakiness, and are wowed by the extra bells and whistles, but don't have a lot of money, the Zenith is a good choice. For myself, I would have been happier spending a bit more, getting fewer features, and having a stabler player. Read more

Fine for playing DVDs and MP3s, not so good for Audio CDs

I had no problem playing DVDs on this unit. It worked fine. I also had success with MP3 CDs. I was able to browse the directory structure of the CD and play the desired albums or tracks. However, Audio CDs are another story. I regularly make CDs of live material, which I edit on my computer, burn to CD, and audition in my living room. When I played one of these CDs on the Zenith, I was dismayed to hear gaps between the CD tracks, with the first 1-2 seconds of each track missing. Thinking that it might be the CD writing software, I wrote another CD with a different program. Same gaps and skips. Finally, I tried a pressed music CD, with similar results. If you intend to play audio CDs on your DVD deck, you should probably look elsewhere. Read more

Good buy

This is the first Dvd player I have bought I can play Dvd's on my computer but wanted a more relaxing way to watch them. I have had this unit for about a year and it is fantastic I watch an average of 45 Hrs. of DVD's a week and have not had a single problem with this system, my roommate had a more expemsive Sony unit that lasted 6 months and couldn't beleave how good my player worked and the picture quality I got for the price I paid. He has since bought the same unit. For the price this is a GREAT player and works as good as some twice the price. Read more
