Overall I am very happy with the ease of use, effectiveness, and gentle effect on the blades I've sharpened. The sharpener has two sharpening slots; a coarse (Tungsten metal) and fine (Ceramic) set of sharpening blades. I found that for several very dull knives we have, that had not been properly sharpened (in a long time) I needed about ten to 20 swipes on the coarse side and then 20 -30 on the fine side to produce a very sharp blade. After the first sharpening I found I can renew the edge with a few coarse swipes, maybe 5, and then about 10-15 swipes on the the fine side to re-sharpen. The unit is very stable and does not flop around in use, unlike some of other hand held knife sharpeners out there, so it is safer to use. Also it does not remove an excessive amount of metal from the blade if used properly. Some of the other cheap hand held units remove excessive amounts of metal from the blade, degrading and prematurely wearing the blade, and creating an edge that does not last. This unit is easy, quick, safe, and creates a great edge without harming the blade. I would recommend it. Read more
Good sharpener for the price. This sharpener is easy to use and yes, it does sharpen my knives. I've found that I will keep my knives sharpened if the sharpener is conveniently stored in my kitchen, is easy to use, and works. This sharpener meets all my qualifications. I had just sharpened some of my most used knives right before purchasing this sharpener; I have to say, this sharpener made those knives sharper. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because I don't feel like it sharpened my serrated knives as well as my smooth bladed knives. Part of the issue could be that my serrated knives haven't been sharpened for a while and it could take several times sharpening them. Read more
Works for me extremely well. I find using the coarse side both sides of blade sharpen evenly and create a nice shoulder with heavier pressure. It does remove steel, so one must pay attention to how much they're removing. The fine side will keep a knife with a decent edge in great shape. I tend to only use the coarse sharpener with lighter pressure. This keeps my knives incredibly sharp and retention is a bit longer since the edge isn't quite as fine. Best manual sharpener of this type I have ever used and appears to be very solid and well constructed. Would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an easy, cheap way to keep an edge on their knives. Read more
We found almost everything about this sharpener wonderful. It is compact, efficient and extremely easy to hold and use - but - there is one small design fail. As you draw the knife blade through the sharpener, when the tip exits the sharpener the blade tends to drop downward. Now this is a natural movement because you have some downward pressure on the knife as you draw it through the sharpener. But, as the knife drops downward it strikes the edge of the sharpener and that causes the last 1/2 inch of the blade to be dulled. The good news is that with a little practice this downward movement can be prevented and the blade remains sharp. A little design change to the area below the sharpening exit would improve this product. Read more
I got this to sharpen serrated knives. I was happy with it. It sharpened our cheap steak knifes well and was easy to use. Then....... I sharpened our expense cooking knives. I expected it to be easy and work very well. The knifes are not serrated. It sucked. Hard to pull the knives through and it appeared a lot of material was coming off each knife. I quit using it right after that and have not tried it again. I became so frustrated and disappointed that I grabbed a beer and have been binge drinking ever since. Read more
It does what its suppose to do. Before buying, my knife had trouble slicing thru tomato skin. I then bought this product. First time sharpen, not so much improvement. So i sharpen sum more. Gradually when i kept doing the sharpening a little at a time, i could slice thru tomato skin. Such joyce. Much happy. My roommate says "wow knife so smooth." Im like "yup." She cut yAMs and chicken chest with it. Cuts nice ever since. I told her "i kept sharpening." She was like "oooooohhhh, niceeee." So on the long run, good buy. Easy for me to use. I don't have much strength so i can't hammer the knife like a blacksmith. This simplified much for me. Make sure to wash knife after sharpening, then keep sharpening later. I got a good version of the product so for those of you who got a defected one i cant say the same. The good one works well. Thank. Read more
