Great taste

Luke McFerranJanuary 15, 2026

I grabbed a 12-pack of the zero sugar root beer in 12 fl oz cans and it’s become my go-to when I want a fizzy treat without the sugar crash. The flavor is surprisingly full and classic — it still has that sweet, creamy root beer taste even though it’s sugar-free, and the carbonation is just right. I like that the cans are the standard size, so they’re perfect for lunches, picnics, or just keeping in the fridge for whenever I want something refreshing. Sometimes zero-sugar drinks can have a weird aftertaste, but I didn’t really notice that with this one. For anyone who loves root beer but is cutting back on sugar, this is a solid, tasty option. Actually tastes like the original without the calories...

Guy Reviews Romance and MoreOctober 18, 2023

There happens to be a couple A&W stores in the SF Bay Area, so I've had canned and "fresh" (yes, I know it came out of dispensers and is made by mixing syrup and soda water), both diet and regular. And I try to save calories when I can. So yes, I actually like A&W's diet root beer. For those of you unfamiliar with root beer, the commercial version is non-alcoholic soft drink that has a distinctive "rooty" flavor, sweet, and carbonated. It is often confused with sarsaparilla, as root beer was first made from the sassafras tree, while sarsaparilla is made from the sarsaparilla vine. The two are NOT related. Modern root beer do NOT use sassafras tree bark as that was found out to cause health problems and was formally banned in 1960 by the FDA. Instead, the brewers use a wide variety of other ingredients (sometimes, even sarsaparilla) to achieve a similar taste profile. Indeed, each brewer would have their own recipe. I personally don't really care about this... I like the root beer taste, and this just lacks the calories like the regular version. And it's often available on sale. Read more

tastes exactly like the full on sugar version

trying to cut back on sugar but I need my root beer. a root beer float without A&W is just a sad glass of ice cream. has that nice bite that a real root beer should - though the Zevia brand makes a very nice competing product as well Read more
