TLDR: 8/10 If you are at all a fan of survival horror games, especially classic ones, this is a definite must buy. I have no idea how this game got so many horrible reviews at launch. Maybe the game launched in an unplayable state, that I don't know. But after a price drop and a few patches this game is definitely worth it. Gameplay feels like a game straight from the golden age of PlayStation 1 and 2. Scares are very mid, but atmosphere is top tier. Story is all over the place, but solid if you read all the files and clues. Finally, replayability is pretty great thanks to the game differeing enough between each character and multiple endings. For casual players, it won't wow you, but for horror fans, this a good fun time. Read more
It's hard to rate video games by star. I reserve five for my absolute favorites (I'm an Until Dawn, The Last of Us, and long ago Vectorman kind of gal.) The best part of this game, to me, is the female character. I can't really think of another one who seems so realistically a woman, brave, resourceful, without cliche interactions with other characters, without twisting her ankle, without having superpowers. No one talks in snark. They talk like people with respect for each other. Like real life. It was so cool being her for a while. The back story is much more interesting that it initially would seem, starting at the trope of seeking a relative missing from a mental health rest home kind of institution, housed in a crumbling southern estate home. The action is post WWI, 1920s. The game doesn't exploit but doesn't pull punches emotionally. The puzzles are challenging but do-able - like the game Siberia, which it reminds me of because it creates an encompassing atmosphere. Toni Morrison said you should approach literature with an open mind, and trust the author to take you where you're intended to go. The problem is the author needs to engage that trust, and not bore you with cliches. This is the first story game that made me think of this. The weird deep backstory wins you over. Or at least, won me over. Recommended. Read more
I waited for a price drop ($30) before picking up this game and I would say it was worth the purchase. I enjoy survival horror games like Resident Evil and Dead Space and Alone in the Dark seemed right up my alley. Alone in the Dark isn't quite as high quality an experience as RE or Dead Space but still worth your time. You'll play through this game pretty quickly, it's about a 9-10 hour game. You can play as one of two characters for your first playthrough and then work your way back with the other character afterwards. $20-$30 price point seems fair to me but the original $60 price was way too high. The voice acting and game graphics are amazing, and I loved the overall look of the game. But the gameplay did become tedious at times, especially the parts where you had to search for clues or wait over time for something to happen. I would have liked more action or some other features that would've made it less repetitive. It's a good game for a rental, or I'd say it's worth buying for $19, but not any more than that. Read more
You can tell the developers have genuine love for the original 1992 game, while also adopting gameplay elements from the modern Resident Evil remake titles. The gameplay isn't perfect - it can be a tad on the easy side, and combat can feel a little janky, but it makes up for it by actually retaining survival horror elements, beautiful environments, fun characters, a solid soundtrack and an engaging story! This is an actual survival horror title, meaning it may not be for everyone; combat is not the priority, and there is a lot of back-tracking. Also, similarly to the original, there are notes you can find that are pretty long but are actually voiced. This is not a remake, by the way, but a reboot! It borrows elements and characters from the original story but the narrative itself is completely different. If you're a survival horror fan, give it a try! I think it's fair to say that Alone in the Dark is officially back! :) Read more
