AMANA RCS10TS Medium-Duty Microwave Oven 1000W

This is FAR better than any of the highly-rated microwave ovens for residential use. It is incredibly easy to clean, as it has no turntable and the interior is all smooth stainless steel except for the bottom panel of the interior which is smooth plastic. No nooks and crannies. The oven door has a sturdy handle, not a push mechanism that will deteriorate and break with extended use. The exterior dimensions are comparable to a medium-sized Panasonic microwave, but the interior cavity is HUGE, similar to what you would find on a large or full-size residential microwave oven. Programming is simple and versatile, with the ability to cook at full power, 70%, 50% or 20%. There also is a countdown timer, useful for items that are supposed to be left standing for a period of time after being microwaved. This is a commercial oven, so it has a fan that operates during each cooking cycle and remains on afterwards for a short time. You can program the unit so that the fan will shut off after 15 seconds. The oven is built in the USA, not China. It seems very sturdy, and as it is engineered for frequent use in a commercial kitchen I expect it will last a long time. The manufacturer technically does not warrant the oven for residential use, but this is because their service personnel are not insured to enter private residences. I was told that they have repair facilities in most major cities, and if you have a problem with the oven you can bring it to a repair facility and they will repair it. The quality of fit and finish on the exterior of the oven is more than acceptable for a commercial unit, not quite up to ultra-high-end residential standards if one were to examine it closely, but the oven looks great on my kitchen counter. We really wanted to like this microwave but it just didn't perform well. The unit looks great and appears to be well built but that's about were it ends. The microwave was slow to heat and did so unevenly. We compared its performance to our 7 year old 1000 watt above range Frigidaire and it always under performed. The Amana could not cook potatoes or burritos evenly and it took on average 20% more time to get these foods up to the same temp. When a burrito was heated up in the Amana, temperatures varied by as much as 40 degrees in different areas. The same thing happened with potatoes. NOTE: these microwaves ovens are designed for commercial use. Once you read all the literature you will find out that the warranty is void if used in a non commercial environment. In other words at home. Since it didn't work correctly and we were using in a non commercial environment, we returned to Amazon and they refunded the purchase price. Thank you Amazon !! I like this microwave! I spent a lot of time researching to find one that was comparable to my 35 year old Amana Radar Range. It was very important to me that it have a stainless steel interior. I don't care that It doesn't have buttons that say defrost etc and I don't find it terribly noisy like some people have complained about. It works wonderfully and the ability to just push one button for either 10 sec., 20 sec, up to 5 min is very convenient. You can also program it to any time you want or punch in the time manually if you like. It has the larger interior I wanted. Heats things quickly and looks great on my counter. The microwave function of this unit, along with the build quality, is excellent. For only a few dollars more it is superior to the typical home microwaves. The only problem is whenever the door is opened, the fan turns on, and it runs for a couple of minutes. (See comments on cutting fan run time.) When the microwave is on, the fan runs as it should, but it doesn't stop for several minutes after the microwave is done, which is mandatory for commercial cooling. However, when the door is opened to get the food out, the fan count starts over. When the door is opened to put something in, the fan timer starts over, even if the door is shut without the microwave ever being turned on. When I open the door to clean the microwave, guess what starts. This unit is fan happy, which makes lots of incidental noise for no apparent reason. With 15 other programming options, how about one to leave the fan off unless the microwave is started. Outside of the excessive fan run time, everything else about this microwave is very good. It cleans easily, it cooks evenly and it's well built. Update: See the comments for instructions on how to cut the fan run time. Every annoying second counts! Update: 4/2018 The more I use this microwave the more I like it. I've cut the fan run time down to 15 seconds, which is much better. There are lots of spare parts if I ever need them. I hope Amana doesn't discontinue this unit. It's a good one for the price. Update: 5/2019. My unit has been running trouble free for 3 years. I noticed more failure reviews for the newer ones. I don't know if Amana changed it or if they had a bad batch. There are a lot of spare parts available for these, and they're mostly easy to repair so I plan on keeping my going for as long as I can.
