I have bought these for all of the beds in our house. I use them with two other products. The 3 products that I use are a (1st) fully encased zippered mattress protector, (2nd) a quilted mattress protector, and (3rd) a terry cloth waterproof mattress protector. The zippered en casement keeps dust and allergens out, the quilted layer adds softness and an extra absorbent layer should anything get through the terry cloth layer. The terry cloth layer is a first line of defense against moisture and wetness. I have found that I usually only need to occasionally wash and replace the top waterproof terry cloth protector. Mattresses are a big investment. Other things that I have tried have failed to protect the mattress but I have been using this 3 item system for years to successfully protect my mattresses and minimize allergens. The zipper was the along the length of the mattress cover making it easy to put on by myself. My new queen size mattress is 11" deep and it seemed to just fit. Not sure how that would work for a deeper mattress. Not overly soft, but value priced. I guess it depends on what you want. I decided to downsize to a twin size bed, a memory foam model on sale via Amazon. Crazy for a 50'something year old to go down to a twin but a full size bed I just didn't need. Decided to get a fully-encased mattress protector since I often will sit up in bed and watch tv and yes, eat in bed. I'm not a slob or anything (lol) but it was a "just in case" sort of thing. There was not that many reviews for this product yet but I was trusting on the AmazonBasics name and rep and ordered it. I always machine wash any linen type item before using. I unzipped it and washed on delicate with a "free" type detergent. Let me tell you, it does hold water! I had to be careful taking it out of washer, being sure to get the water out of it. Point is, I was confident it was waterproof. I put in dryer on delicate very low heat setting and kept an eye on it, not leaving it in past being dry, didn't take long. After washing and drying, no damage to it whatsoever, felt certain it could be washed and dried when needed. I put on my 12" memory foam mattress with no issue by myself but mind you, it was a twin and this model or protector was the 12-18" size. Zipper worked great. It makes no noise for me moving around. The only thing I would have done differently, is gotten the smaller size that went up to 12". I had concern that model would be too snug maybe and not allow the memory foam to expand fully after putting it on or make it take longer. I mean after I moved around a bit at night, etc. Now I know that probably wouldn't be the case. Hey! It is my first memory foam mattress! lol I've been using for several months now. Purchased 2 of these when I got my new memory foam mattress as I didn't want to damage it. First night in the bed our Great Dane sprinted in from outside and hopped right up on the bed soaking wet. We ushered her off and even though the sheet was soaked and the protector was wet, nothing went through to the mattress. Awesome! Yay protector. We swapped it out with the other one, put on new sheets, and called it a night. This morning my 2 year old got ahold of our mouthwash bottle. It only had a mouthful left in it so we left it out to remind us to get more. Not sure what his plan was, but long story short, it ended up poured on the end of the mattress. I wasn't too worried as the bed was made but it not only soaked through our blanket and sheets, but also through the protector to the mattress! Thankfully the memory foam is covered with a removable washable cotton cover which soaked up the remaining liquid without harming the foam, but what would have happened if someone had wet the bed? There was a minuscule amount of mouthwash left, it doesn't seem to be able to protect from any substantial amount of liquid. Good deal if you need some very light, basic protection, but I'll be purchasing a different protector. Read more
