Yes, but it doesnt have to be - I reach a decent sharpness with all my kitchen blades. Rarely have an issue. I didn’t expect much, it’s a simple product but they’ve actually gone above and beyond with this one. The rubber protector makes the whetstone stick to the counter amazingly and I’ve not even had to worry about getting hurt. As it’s basically a two sided rock it’s really on the user to get the knife sharp but with the angle guide even an amateur like myself can get a really sharp edge.
