Here is the recipe for homemade corn-free (grain-free) baking powder: 1 part baking soda 2 parts cream of tartar 2 parts starch (potato starch, tapioca starch, or arrowroot) Mix together and store in a closed container. Anthony’s Premium Cream of Tartar stays fresh in the resealable bag and is a bargain when used to make this baking powder recipe. It is easy to measure out the exact quantity for baking, knowing it is a quality food grade, non GMO item. Read more

Great cream of tartar and I appreciate the large size bag. Husband and I use this to keep our potassium levels up. It is the gentlest and most easily absorbed form of potassium. No upset tummy. Lab work proves it as effective. We wouldn't be without it. Read more

Background: Let me give you some background before I begin this review. My husband and daughter have the severest form of celiac disease. My husband also has gluten ataxia which is a rare auto-immune movement disorder that causes damage to his cerebellum and nervous system when exposed to his triggers which are mainly gluten. When he is exposed to even a molecule of gluten protein or one of his cross-reactives that are similar enough to gluten to trigger a reaction, he loses the ability to control his movements and shakes uncontrollably. He is unable to walk properly and talk coherently for about 4 months, and he always sustains permanent nervous system damage. One exposure takes about 2 years for him to recover as much as possible. Our daughter's reactions are extremely severe as well. I won't take the time to list them all here, but I will say that she even experiences temporary dyslexia that lasts for several months after an exposure. Her celiac disease is so severe that her celiac doctors said that home schooling was her only safe option in order to keep her environment safe enough. She was diagnosed at 5 years old, and she is 14 now. I tell you these things because health issues with gluten definitely have a spectrum. My family is on the extreme end, so we have to test even many gluten free products for gluten present below the 20 parts per million threshold. Gluten free certifed guarantees that there isn't gluten present at 20 parts per million or above. Many people can handle a small amount of gluten present under that threshold. My family can't. This review is for those in the same boat. When I do a Glutentox home gluten test for a product, I often test items that are new to us or items that are more likely to have cross-contamination. I am testing for 5 parts per million which is the highest sensitivity the test will do. I try to post results because it is a pain to test for gluten at home, and it adds about $20 to the cost of the item due to the cost of the test. Although since Glutentox testing is a life saver in my home, I would gladly pay more to keep my family safe. I just figure why not share the knowledge with others about the test results to help anyone else out there who is extremely sensitive to gluten. My test results for this bag: We use many Anthony's products that we no longer test each bag because my husband and daughter have never had issues and the likelihood of cross-contamination is very small with that specific food. The one product of Anthony's that we can't use is their flaxseed meal because it too often had cross-contamination below the 20 parts per million, but this is just a general problem with flaxseed. Any bag of flax seed we get is always tested by us because it is extremely difficult to keep gluten out of flaxseed processing no matter from whom you purchase it. This was my first time using Anthony's cream of tartar. We normally use Spicely's gluten free certifed cream of tartar, but it is so much more expensive from them, so we decided to try Anthony's which is a better price and a larger amount. No gluten was present at the 5 parts per million. I included the picture showing the test cartridge with the control strip showing but no pink that would indicate gluten present. My family also had no reaction when consuming it. Cream of tartar is normally not a high risk item, so I won't test the next bag. I am satisfied with this for my family and our situation. Hope this helps with yours! Also, it was very nice cream of tartar and made a wonderful auto-immune protocol gluten-free king cake. Extra information: As a household with extreme gluten sensitivity these are the Anthony's products we use as staples and have for years with no reactions. I take ⅛ ts of cream of tartar daily to control my BP & stay off meds! Our veins get stiff with age/illness & potassium keeps them soft, and cream of tartar is a great source of potassium. I mix it in a swig of OJ because the powder is tart & salty, so it blends well & works amazing! Buy Anthonys Cream of Tartar & a quality BP monitor from Amazon. Make sure you learn how to property check type BP & keep track daily, so you can adjust the tartar to your personal needs. It's cheap, easy & works!
