Even if I didn't need this device for tamping espresso, I would still love it. As many other reviewers have noted, it is good and heavy. It anchors the hand, filling perhaps some primitive need to feel secure and rooted. And it is equally satisfying to look at. And it was pretty cheap. And, of course, it tamps my espresso, but even if it didn't I would still be glad to have it. As Ivo Andric notes in his novel BRIDGE ON THE DRINA, a wooden bridge will serve to get folks across a river, but a magnificent stone bridge with arches and a kapia brings joy to the heart. Initially, I was concerned about the diameter of the tamper. I have a Starbucks Espresso Maker, and the coffee basket is two inches in diameter. I know that 2.54 cm equals an inch, or 25.4 mm equals an inch. So I wanted a tamper that would measure about 50 mm. I got this model because it came in a 49 mm diameter (I thought that the next size up -- 51 mm -- might be a bit too large). I also bought this because of the price (some of the tampers on the Amazon site are EXPENSIVE! When I got the tamper, I was amazed by how much it weighs. I just put the tamper on the grounds and let the weight of the tamper compress the grounds. I guess this is how it was designed and how it is to be used. The tamper does a fine job and I would take it over what I had earlier -- a light metal tamper on a handle with a measure from Starbucks. Read more

Very dense and heavy, clearly a high quality product. Ordered this because my espresso machine came with a very cheap, plastic tamper. This one looks and feels great, and is exactly the right size for the job. Does it actually affect the taste of the espresso? I might not have enough of a refined palate to answer that, but it definitely does a better job tamping it down than the cheap plastic one I have. Read more
