Surprisingly good volume and fidelity

Jerry SapersteinNovember 3, 2013

I've taken to listening to podcasts and audiobooks. Time in the shower is as good or better than any other time for this activity, but my tablet didn't produce quite enough volume for my aging ears. So I got myself a Sound pOp - and very pleased with it. It charges quickly from a laptop USB port, though I would strongly urge that you pack a 5v adapter if you travel with the Sound pOp. Happily, you can use the Sound pOp while it is charging, a major plus in my book. The sound from the Sound pOp is surprisingly good. Spoken voice reproduction is simply excellent. The voices sound natural without the tinniness so often heard in laptop speakers and cheap external speakers. Music sounds good, though it lacks extreme bass and treble. Output volume is also unexpectedly good. It's loud enough for listening in a good sized, reasonably quiet room. Some motel room heater/air conditioners will easily drown it out. Bluetooth pairing was flawless and quick. The Sound pOp can only be paired with one device at a time. Reception started breaking up in about 20 feet as I moved through our home. I didn't fully test out the cell phone controls, but I did test the unit microphone with Skype and it produced good quality output at adequate volume. Overall, an excellent unit at a good price. Works fine for its intended purpose in the shower as well as elsewhere. I like it. Jerry Read more

First impressions of the pop

DLuuSeptember 5, 2013

Pairing When I first opened up the pop, I immediately plugged it in and was able to turn it on to begin pairing. I paired it with my android phone which took less 20 seconds. Pairing with my laptop was not difficult either through Add Device function in Windows. Once paired with the laptop, you can set the pop to be the default audio output so that whenever the pop is connected, all audio will output through the pop. Sound Quality The sound quality is pretty impressive. This little device is smaller than a baseball so you can't really expect the bass to shake your table, but you can definitely feel it thump when you hold it in your hands. The sound quality is better than my MSI GT60 laptop, and the GT60 laptop has the best bass in any laptop that I have ever heard. Sometimes I do feel that the speaker crackles a bit on the high end, but I haven't been able to figure out whether it is because of audio file quality, bluetooth, or the speaker itself. You can't really tell if you only use this in the shower though. Functionality This little device has a lot more functionality than I imagined, though it is my first time owning a bluetooth speaker. Some functionality I did not know exist: 1. Call button works as play/pause if you quick press it 2. Holding the Volume + button will skip to the next track 3. Holding the Volume - button will skip to the beginning of the song 4. Holding the call button when paired with a computer will actually call the last person (I use skype so it actually called using skype) 5. Media functionality work on both the phone and the computer (Play/Pause/Skip/Call) How I use the pop I stick the pop on my shower wall, not too high in case it does fall. Since the pop is paired with my laptop, it will automatically connect to the laptop once the pop is turned on. I leave my audio player (MusicBee) open at all times on my laptop. Using the call button will actually start playing the music in my audio player if it is not already playing. I can then use the Volume + button to skip tracks. Overall I think this was a great buy (Around $30), and I would definitely recommend this to people who want a bluetooth speaker for the shower. I would definitely buy another one if mine broke. Compared to the Oontz, this speaker is not as loud and less bass probably because of the size difference, but the pop offers much more clarity, and less mids (the way I like it). One quirk I have about this is the buttons. Even if you press the buttons and hear the click, it doesn't mean that it was registered. Sometimes you need to press harder after the click to get the buttons to work. My first device had this issue with the power button, which made it hard to turn on the device so I exchanged it. The new one has issues with the volume + button, so sometimes I end up increasing volume rather than skipping tracks. Read more

Big Sound from a Small Device

Tom - New Albany, OhioAugust 18, 2013

I've used this device for two days and the sound produced is somewhat remarkable from such a small device. It does a good job at presenting the different frequencies - you can hear the base guitar tones clearly separate and apart from the lead guitar sounds and drums. The volume level is acceptable. The device construction is durable, the suction cup more than sufficient to stick to the shower door glass without worry of it falling off. Occasionally, the blue tooth signal breaks momentarily, but not frequent enough to be annoying. If you're looking for a little device that will allow you to rock in the shower or make cooking in the kitchen more enjoyable, this little guy might be for you. Well worth the cost. I know I will get tons of use from it and appreciate the quality construction. It's not a Bose surround sound experience, but it's a little difficult to take your Bose gear into the shower with you. As such, it delivers a very acceptable experience given its footprint. This is an update to my initial post. Several months later, the device is still operating perfectly, despite being dropped several times, often from 5 feet or more to the shower floor, only because I tried to stick it to the tile wall instead of the glass shower door, which I've learned doesn't work well! Additionally, when mounted to the glass shower door, it receives a good bit of water spray. I generally towel it dry after a shower, but despite much abuse from dropping and water spray, it continues to work perfectly. The average play/charge time is about 1.5 hours, but I listen to it at a pretty high volume. All things considered, I am very happy with this device. I only wish the buttons were better illustrated; the entire shell is the same color, making the power button difficult to distinguish from the other buttons (volume up, down, etc.). Given how tightly the suction cup holds this device to a glass [shower door] surface, you have to twist it around and examine the buttons closely to locate the desired control button. That said, as mentioned, it has suffered much abuse over the last several months, but has continued to perform flawlessly Although I end up charging the device every other day, I totally enjoy it. If you want a reliable device for listening to news or rocking in the shower at high volume, this device will not disappoint. Just be prepared to charge it regularly. Read more
