I am a huge fan of Bala products for their quality and this mat did not disappoint! The thickness of the mat is my favorite thing - I use it for yoga and most other yoga mats that I've tried are lacking in cushion - not this one. The ability of the mat to fold is cool too, especially when doing yoga poses that have you on your knees a lot - it lets you fold the mat on itself easily to give your knees more support. The mat also feels very durable, and is super easy to clean off after working out. My only complaint is that I find the mat to be a little slippery - it has more of a gym mat finish vs. a traditional yoga "sticky" mat finish, so if you like to wear socks or tend to sweat during yoga, it can be hard to get traction. Like all of the items made by Bala, this mat is high quality, but it wasn't my favorite. The materials used are different from their standard yoga mats. It is much lighter in weight yet still durable. It does a fairly good job of absorbing sweat and is constructed of high density foam encased in a vinyl like material with texture. On the front side there are tiny diagonal lines or grooves and the bottom has a non-slip circular textured pattern which helps keep the mat in place on hard flooring. I found the grip be good, although sometimes, if your hands are wet and positioned in the same direction as the grooves and you are pushing, your hand may slip a bit. To remedy this I just changed my direction and it was fine. It folds up easily and stays flat. When folded the mat is about 3.5" high. The creases are flexible yet durable and will hold up well over time. Rounded corners on the ends are smooth and eliminate curling and a light resistance band is included to wrap around the mat to keep it closed. The band can also be used for exercises which is a bonus. It's easy to carry at only 3pounds and much lighter than their standard roll up mat. Although it is packable, its still quite large when folded (3.5" H x 24"W x 11" D) and will take up quite a bit of space in your suitcase. Personally I wouldn't take this on a trip where I had to fly due to the size. It has great cushioning which is better than solid roll-up yoga mats and is easy to use on hard flooring. The look, feel and quality of this folding mat are all high. Its durable and will perform well over time, even with high use. It does have a funky "new mat" smell that mostly fades after airing out. The unfolded size (23" x 63") is good for even taller individuals. The quality is high which is reflected in the price, and although it is a very good mat and has some nice features, I found it to only be a fair value for the high price of $89.00. Longterm Bala customer for the past few years, and I love their line of fitness products... was thrilled at the opportunity to review this mat! Overall, the quality of this mat is exceptional. It is thick, but designed in a way that is both aesthetic and portable. Many mats available market themselves as "comfort," but are poorly made, and Bala takes quality to the next level. I have no doubt this workout mat will last for years, even with heavy use. The width and length of the mat are good, the quality is attractive, and the slip resistance is one of the best I've used. I am 6' tall, so I'd prefer a slightly longer gym mat, but this is entirely useable otherwise. The color is also lovely, and coordinates with all of my other Bala products in my home workout kit. I own two other Bala products, and this mat is completely consistent with their quality. The finish and feel are identical and that familiar, durable texture that provides a good grip and feels solid. It has the same well-constructed quality I’ve come to expect from the brand. Overall, it satisfies for my yoga classes. The main advantage here is the folding design. It’s incredibly convenient to be able to quickly fold the mat into a compact rectangle. This makes it trivial to pack up and take with you, or just to stow it away neatly at home. For someone who needs to tidy up fast or wants a mat that’s easy to transport, this feature really delivers. Given its performance and portability, I would recommend it, especially if you’re already a fan of Bala’s material quality and are looking for a more space-efficient option. Read more
