This appears to be a pretty standard balaclava except for a piece of fabric sewn across the face hole. This strap can be used as a face mask without pulling up the bottom of the face hole like a traditional balaclava. It also slides out of the way as a sort of headband. I guess you could slide it down, if you really wanted. As is typical, you can roll everything up and make a sort of a watchcap ("knit" cap, incorrectly referred to as a beanie). The material is is smooth on one side and fleeced on the other to provide warmth and some water resistance. It's not the easiest to don, particularly with the strap in the way, but adjustments can be made after it's on. The biggest con, is the sour breath smell common to masks and scarves. Unlike other masks, the humidity makes this mask sour very quickly compared to other masks. It's a bit disappointing as a mask, but it will keep the rest of your head warm. Read more

The versatility of this balaclava really makes this a great choice. You can pull the top down around your neck for just face protection. It can cover all but your eye area as shown. It pulls down over your mouth easily to allow you to talk or take a drink without having to remove the whole piece. The stitching is well constructed and smooth. It feels like it will hold up well.
