I installed these rails on both sides of my king size mattress. After my lumbar spine surgery I needed a way to use my hands and arms to help me roll my body from side to side so I could sleep on either side or on my back. These rails gave me something solid to hold onto and thus helped me to manipulate my body during that rolling process. I am a bit overweight and rolling from side to side was not always an easy task even before my surgery. Since the size of my kingsize mattress only lets me reach one railings at at time, I fastened the supplied strap onto the upper bar with the rubber on it on one of the rails which allows me to grab the strap with my hand. By pulling on the strap I can roll my body onto the side. All this sounds a bit complicated, but it is not and works great. I did not have to strap the rails to the bed frame for stability. I slipped the lower part of the assembled rails between the box sping and the top mattress which holds the rails very solidly. These bed rails are also very useful for getting in and out of the bed. The rails are of good quality and are very easy to assemble. The part of the rails that slips between the mattress and the box spring is adjustable; I fully extended it for good stability when positioned between the mattresses. The vertical part of the rails is also adjustable to accommodate different thicknesses of mattresses. I am very happy to have found these rails at Amazon, they have made it much easier to move/roll my body from side to side and to get in and out of bed. Also, the rails are narrow enough and do not interfere with getting in and out of bed.I can highly recommend to install these rails, they have made my live so much easier. I purchased this rail when I was being released from the hospital after having hip repair surgery due to a fall. I couldn't get in or out of bed by myself for a few weeks, nor could I turn over by myself during that time. This rail, as my review caption says, has been a life saver! My husband said it was very easy to put together and it slides so far under the mattress that it doesn't need to be tied onto it. The actual rail has a soft coating on top so it's not cold or slippery. There is an attachment with small pockets. I put my cell phone in it, as well as whatever book I was reading at the time. It is extremely sturdy. I had no problem or trepidation grabbing the rail with my full weight to get up out of bed, get into bed, or turn around. Easy to install. Fits my 92 year old mom’s adjustable bed (we were worried about how it would function with movement, no issues). Comfortable for her getting in and out of the bed. Bought this for after a surgery and it has been an absolute lifesaver getting in and out of bed. I don't have a box spring and my bed frame is a loft style with large gaps between bars and there is no issue at all in use as I was concerned it might not install properly. But it works just as it should! Very sturdy, good design,holds a lot of support, and the adjustable bar is nice to adapt to your height or mattress height. Well worth it. I should note, my fiance put it together and required tightening with a provided Allen wrench, some hand tightening, and there is a safety strap to also tie down. May be difficult to assemble or get all the way under a large mattress as a solo injured person or elderly, depending on strength or mattress. Read more

this item is perfect. Very stable and secure. Its a good size too, just enough to be able to assist to get into bed and out of bed for my dad. I got it for him bc he slipped coming off the bed in the middle of the night having to use the restroom. He had no secure footing. This right here is so helpful.
