These actually look and feel a ton nicer than I expected. Okay, not a ton, since they are only 15 lbs, but for a non-standard looking barbells, they are well-made with a design that is striking modern style, looks nice both put away and holding them. I actually like the way they look better than my other traditional barbels. They have a modern, minimalist style that I like. The color is more dark gray matte, in my opinion, than full black, which I like. The ends stay attached even if they are the screw-on type. And they feel just like my other barbel: the grip is good and the clearance between the ends are appropriate. I weight them using digital scale with me, and subtracted my weight, and they came as described in 15 lbs. The size is similar to your barbells you find at the gym. I did not notice any smell out of the box. I placed it near my nose, and it smells like metal, like iron. Not bad for the money. If I could get this in an actual set, that would be awesome looking. The media could not be loaded. I have a lot of CAP, Troy and Body Solid home gym equipment, and in particular, CAP is a very good brand for when you need solid gym equipment at a good price. These adjustable dumbbells use a threaded connection that varies per weight, some are female, some are dual male/female threaded. You turn clockwise to remove a plate, counterclockwise to add a plate. At the minimum, each dumbbell will be 1lb for the handle + 3 pounds for at least one plate on one side for a total of 4 lbs. Thereafter, you add plates in order of 3, 2.5 and 1.5 for a total of 7lbs on each side + 1lb for the handle for a total of 15lbs. Please note, you must follow that plate order, you can't add 3+1.5. You must add 3, then 2.5 then 1.5 on one side. I'd recommend you add grease to the threads like I did if you plan to adjust the weight frequently. With that said you can get these possible weight combinations per dumbbell: 1lb (handle) + 3lb (plate) = 4lbs. 1lb (handle) + 3lb(x2) (plates) = 7lbs 1lb (handle) + 3lb(x2) (plates) + 2.5 (plate) = 9.5lbs 1lb (handle) + 3lb(x2) (plates) + 2.5lb(x2) (plates) = 12lbs 1lb (handle) + 3lb(x2) (plates) + 2.5lb(x2) (plates) + 1.5lbs plate = 13.5lbs 1lb (handle) + 3lb(x2) (plates) + 2.5lb(x2) (plates) + 1.5lbs(x2) plates = 15lbs At the time of review, the price for a pair is: $89.99. This is more than 2x the cost of a fixed set of 15lbs dumbbells from CAP. The value of this lies in the fact you can change the weight which takes up less storage room and would cost similar or less then if you got a pair of each of the range of weights I've mentioned above in terms of weight combinations. Final note: they were packaged exceptionally well (see photos,) however, I did have some scuff marks on mine that were probably made at the factory, but a sharpie will cover that. These are nice easy to use cast iron weights that are nice for you workout. Unit are easy to use and like the fact each section screws into the other weight. You can start off with the lightest weight then mix up the weight until you reach the maximum of 15lbs per dumbbell. Unit has a nice chrome handle and it is knurled for good grip. Handle can be a little tough on your hand through as it has no cushion. The built quality is good no complaints. Overall only issue I had when they arrived the smaller weight was very tight and I had to install in a vise to remove, put a few scratches because I had to use a very large channel lock to remove, yeah it was that tight. I'm revoering from a surgery and am slowly adding weight to my PT. I got these weights with the intend on having a one and done weight set for the time being. They are well built, accurately weighted enough to be fine, and look just fine. They feel great in the hand as well. My one knock, and it's a bigger one is that I have a plate on each dumbell that is apparently tightened up so hard it's friction locked to the other plate. No neither dumbell truly is currently adjustable. I'm weakened from surgery recovery and am currently just unable to get them unlocked. I'm not sure how one would prevent this other than using care when adding or removing the plates. I'd make a couple of changes to the design and improve the item to make it easier to use. If I can get them unlocked at some point and use them correctly as well as get them on and off without having to battle them every time I want to adjust them I will adjust the reviews. But for the time being, I can not adjust them, and that was the purpose of getting them. Solid build, good weight, decent design, stuck plates, they aren't junk. That's the run down. Read more
