Big sherp for a big guy that lives up to the Carhartt brand name.

First time in a long time I wish we weren't heading into warm weather. This cotton jacket is rugged, the zipper is strong the fit it just slightly larger than I expected but for a big guy its hard to find jackets that fit perfect in the arms. That said this is warm but light and with the sealed cuffs, perfect for slipping over my gloves when riding. I think the best part is the waist. This jacket doesn't try to be a trench coat, it covers just beyond the waist then stops, leaving you with 100 percent mobility from the waist down. Couple that great length with raised side panels and you have a jacket that basically fits like your favorite shirt. I mean there is nothing not great about this jacket. The color is ever so slightly faded or maybe a better term is muted so gives the appearance of being broken in. If you have ever owned any of the other Carhartt, lets call them "weather" jackets you would know they are so stiff when you first get them you can't wear them without feeling rigid and bound. They feel that way for darn near a year or longer. NOT here. This Sierra Jacket feels sturdy but also feels worn in at the same time. I mean the theme of this review should be obvious at this point. This Jacket is great. Great quality, great fit, great look. Please look closely at the the Zipper and note. It IS concealed behind seamed fabric edging but if you look very close along the front main zipper you should see a small thin area where the zipper is exposed between the edging. I like this little detail because there isn't a raised area down the front of the jacket. No overlapping edges creating thickness to conceal the zipper. This is perfect for me, it leaves the jacket flat across and down the front, perfect. No raised area, no stuck zippers. Looking at the pictures you can't really see the internal sleeve cuff. It's there, a stretchable internal cuff that seals your wrist from air leaving the external cuff loose around the arm. This is really a great jacket. I highly recommend it for EVERY Carhartt owner. You will not be disappointed. Read more

Warm, tough as nails, jacket - some insights on size and fit

wvrktguyFebruary 22, 2015✓ Verified purchase

Let me start off with some information that may help folks with sizing. When reading all the reviews here and on other sites, there was no doubt this would be an excellent and durable jacket; however, the data points regarding size by height and weight were all over the place. Granted, there isn't a right answer for everyone regarding the appropriate fit of the jacket so I'll let you know what worked for me. I'm right at 6' 0" and weight generally stays around 170 and have a reasonably fit build. My torso and arms are a little longer than normal and typically, if I can find it, a medium tall fits me perfectly. However, many manufacturers don't start including tall sizes until you get into large size jackets and up. Also, I have several other Carhartt jackets and oddly enough I typically need to get a large or sometimes even an xl to fit my arms (sounds odd I know). Another data point - in suits or sport coats I typically wear a 41L. So, I couldn't find anywhere locally that carried this exact jacket so I rolled the dice and ordered a large from Amazon knowing they have an awesome return policy. Well, as it turns out, I got lucky and the large fits me absolutely perfectly. Plenty of length in the arms and body but not too bulky. I could easily get a sweatshirt on under but its not like I'm swiming in the jacket. If I have one complaint it is that the arms are just a tad baggy but I'm positive if I had gotten a medium it would have been too short in the arms and body and possibly a little tight in the chest. The extra room in the arms doesn't really bother me and it doesn't look bad, just a little more bulk/room than I would prefer in a perfect world. Overall, as it is clear in other reviews, this is an incredibly warm and durable jacket. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. Read more

Extremely Happy With This Jacket!!!

Old GuyMay 16, 2015✓ Verified purchase

I've been dieting the last few months and have gone from a 2XL back to a large and have been buying a lot of new clothes. One item on my to buy list was a new Carhartt jacket. Years ago I had recieved a Carhartt Active Jacket as a gift from the company I used to work for. I gave it away over 10 years ago after I gained so much weight due to inactivity from a back and neck problem. I never cared much for the knit cuffs or waist band, but loved the duribility and wind protection. After browsing through the Carhartt offerings on Amazon, I saw the Sierra Jacket and it solved the two dislikes I had of the Active Jacket. I lucked out and Amazon is having a 20% percent discount promotion on exactly the jacket I wanted, so I ordered it. I was uncertain after reading numerous reviews about what size I actually needed since the sizing comments were all over the place. I took a chance and ordered a large. It is a perfect choice for me. The shoulders, arm length, and waist length are perfect. The gut area is a bit snug, but since I still have another 10-15 pounds to lose, it'll be perfect by next fall when I need it. I went from 245 pounds to my current weight of 190. I'm 5'9" and a medium would have been way too small while a XL would probably fit my gut a bit better, it would be too big every where else. This is typical Carhartt quality. I loved it as soon as I put it on. The sandstone finish makes it feel like a well worn in jacket. The hood is perfect. Not too big or too small. I've only worn the jacket once when I walked my dog yesterday. It was cool and windy and also sprinkled a little rain. The jacket performed perfectly. I'm extremely happy I bought this jacket. The black color makes it look very expensive too. I may eventually buy one or two more in other colors. Read more
