The edges are squared but I wear thicker socks and insert the shoehorn squarely so this has been a non-issue to me. It is plenty wide for my size 13 men's shoes, might be on the wide side for small ladies or kids shoes. I like the covered handle, I can see how the cover could pull off but since I am not using this as a crow bar I have not had that problem.
