There are two open side pockets, plus one zippered side pocket. The zippered pocket is large enough for a wallet but too small for a mid-size smart phone, although a smartphone easily fits in the open pockets. I like the wide, smooth waistband, it's comfortable and keeps the shorts in place. The length is perfect, just above my knee. I got a medium, which is my typical size, and it fits perfectly.
