File has a coarse side and a finer side. Coarse side is on label side, but I also added a drop of red lacquer fingernail polish to the coarse side near the handle to easily identify heavier grit. I have used both sides successfully for my hardened toenails. No more bleeding caused by nippers. Washes easily in hot water. Natural fingernails only require finer grit side.
