It's apparent from reviews that a lot of people don't know how heated gear works. You can't expect a light shell to do the work of a down parka in sub-freezing temperatures just because it has a heating element in it. The most important factors when using heated gear are fit and insulation. I'm typically an XL, but this jacket seems to run big and the fit should be snug on heated gear so I went down to an L. Got a refund on the XL immediately upon dropping it off at the local drop point. It's currently 17 degrees and I just walked for 40 minutes with this shell on over a tee shirt and underneath my North face puffer. Had it on the lowest setting and I was TOASTY. When it's windy I sometimes bump it up to medium for a while. Can't image every using this thing on high. A couple little tricks about this brand - first when you first plug in the battery and turn it on it's on high, then switches to medium after a while - this seems to be a "quick heat" function as all the items I have from this brand do it. Second, it has a safety on it so if the battery is connected and the jacket is off, it eventually times out and won't turn back on. Just unplug the battery and plug it back in and you're good to go. 5'9" | 145 lbs. | Medium Pros: Medium is perfect fit for me. Jackets looks great and feels high-quality. Warmth is solid, not great (see below). Lots of zippered pockets. Cons: Battery is heavy. Not a big deal but noticeable. Observed battery life: About 7 hours at 10% high/90% medium. Battery on low produces little noticeable heat. I bought this to wear in the back room/office of my house because working during the winter gets uncomfortably cold as I have overly sensitive nerves, and I don't want to turn up the heat for one room. The coat is great for this application. Feels warm on medium setting and is comfortable. I have worn it outside at around 45-50F in cloudy, windy weather. In this case, the battery set to high was barely noticeable. If I had purchased this primarily for outdoor use in cold weather, I would have returned it. Might work as a base layer in this application, but probably too bulky. Read more

The first year I had this jacket I really loved it! It was incredibly warm and I loved the style and fit. It's heavy, but not uncomfortably so, and it felt like it was high quality. However, after that first winter, it will not turn on. This is not a problem with the battery pack, as it charges fine. This has to be an issue with the internal wiring of the jacket itself. The jacket was hanging in a closet during the off-season, so there were no folds or bunches or anything that could have caused this. I've had it too long to return it, and it's too expensive for me to risk throwing money at another one to replace this one. I still use it as just a regular jacket, because it does feel nice and has features like the little zipper pockets on the arms that I like, but I'm incredibly disappointed that its main feature no longer works.
