I have been taking various collagen products for a few years now. Mostly for joint repair and maintenance,as well as skin health. When I ran out of my normal powder, I decided to see if I could find a similar product for a lower cost. Doctor's Best is a company that has a good reputation,and it's collagen powder is very competitively priced. It's a few dollars cheaper than my normal powder. So I decided to give it a try. Now,collagen isn't one of those supplements that you will be able to feel on the first day. It takes time and daily usage. There are some studies that show regular consumption of collagen can help repair damaged joints as well as help skin look more hydrated and fuller. This powder is virtually tasteless and mixes well. I mix it into 1 cup of hot water along with a tablespoon of cacao powder. This makes for a very nice tasting warm beverage,but you do not need to mix in cacoa if you do not want. The powder does not have a real distinct flavor on it's own,which is a great thing. Ever since starting collagen a few years ago,I have softer and more hydrated skin. I am a man in my 30s and people,mostly women,comment that I look younger. That's always a plus. I have also noticed when I run out of collagen powder and skip it for a few weeks,the ache in my shoulder returns. It's from an old injury and collagen definitely helps it. I take my collagen on an empty stomach,usually when I wake up. The studies done on collagen have the subjects taking it this way as well,so that is something to keep in mind. Collagen is a protein found in the skin and other connective tissue throughout the body. When collagen is digested, it is broken down into its amino acids just like any other protein. Then, those amino acids are used by the body to build the collagen it needs. Different types of proteins contain amounts of amino acids. Collagen is heavy in certain amino acids needed by the body to build collagen within the body. One question someone might ask is: If collagen is protein, then why can’t my body just make collagen from other sources of protein like chicken or meat? That’s a good question. Collagen contains a broad spectrum of amino acids; however, it contains heavy amounts of only certain amino acids. This composition of amino acids is much different than the composition of amino acids from the protein in chicken or meat. These heavier amounts of amino acids are then needed by the body to make its own collagen. Chicken or meat simply don’t have enough of these needed specific amino acids. I take this in the morning when I wake up. I put one scoop in a glass bottle filled with distilled water, cap it, and then shake it until it completely dissolves, which usually happens fairly quickly. After I drink the water, I wait 20-30 minutes before I eat any protein. I believe it would be okay to eat any food that does not contain protein (or little protein) like an apple, and it would also be okay to, for example, drink juice since that contains little protein. I have purchased this many times, and I have had no issues using this product. I would recommend this product to anyone seeking to supplement their diet with collagen.
