DREAM RECOVERY | PERFORMANCE SILK SLEEP MASK | STYLE: THE PRO | MATERIAL: BAMBOO COOL-TECH SILK FIT AND LIGHT BLOCKING This mask takes up a lot of real estate on my face, but in a good way. I have a petite head (like the junior-size mannequin used in the product photos), and the overall cut of the mask seems like it would accommodate a wide range of head sizes. The eye pockets are plenty deep, which is great if you don’t like the mask touching your eyelashes. I was able to get full blackout without the mask feeling too tight, and I experienced zero light leak, even when flipping back and forth throughout the night as a side sleeper. The cushion around the nose seems designed to accommodate many different nose sizes while keeping the light out. PHOTO FIT NOTE: The mannequin used for display purposes has a tiny button nose—much smaller than you might realize from the photos—so that broad gap between the eyes and the nose isn’t really as wide open as the pictures depict. TEMPERATURE AND COMFORT I find that this mask sleeps incredibly cool. It is noticeably cooler than my standard 3D memory-foam masks. Although, this is strictly a comparison—not a stress—test at this point, as it is the middle of winter and I keep my room quite cool at night. (I am a hot sleeper though, and I’m not waking up with a steamy mask, so that’s a good sign.) I’m also not really conscious of the closure being in the middle of the back of my head—which, has been a breaking point for me with many a mask—but, I’m a side sleeper and can’t attest for the comfort if you sleep on your back. CLOSURE CONCERNS (VELCRO) I typically avoid any mask that uses Velcro for closure, especially when it sits on the back of the head. I have long hair, and I usually have to secure masks fairly tight to keep them on. This means the Velcro sections barely touch, leaving a majority of the sticky part exposed and at risk of catching my hair. The inner band has so far kept the sticky part from ever catching my hair, but for those with smaller heads like mine, the exposed Velcro is a concern. For a mask at this price point (almost twice what some of my other quality bamboo/silk masks cost), I wish it had a non-intrusive adjustable slider strap that tightened on the side of the head. VALUE I am struggling with the $39 price point. I own several cooling sleep masks made from high-quality materials (mulberry silk, bamboo viscose, eucalyptus tencel), and they cost significantly less, though they don’t always have the 3D contoured eye cutout that this one does. I’m always disappointed in the summer to switch to my cooling masks that don’t have the foam cutout, so this is a notable feature for me. An additional selling point is the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of the silver ions—as I regularly launder my masks for skincare reasons. However, the true value will depend on the masks through regular laundering. My experience is that repeated washing, even in cool water, can start to diminish the cooling nature of these performance cooling fabrics. If this mask can retain its cool nature and form after repeated laundering, and sleep just as cool in the summer, it might justify the investment. (Although, I’d still prefer a non-Velcro adjustable closure.) Read more

I was not expecting this Dream Recovery The Pro Mask to be this good, because as someone who thought they had tried every sleeping mask under the sun, I figured there wasn’t really any room for innovation. I think I just didn’t realize that it’s possible to optimize the traditional sleeping mask, but you’re not going to be able to sell it at the usual $20 price point. For about twice that, though, you get a REALLY exceptional sleeping mask that feels premium in every way. This thing is DENSE, including the strap, which is usually where sleeping mask manufacturers (in my experience) tend to skimp. It has a kind of thick, elastic, heavy duty scrunchie-type band that is super comfortable even when tight (which is how I like my bands). Because the band is kind of bunched up/fluffy and wide, it distributes the pressure across a much wider area of a traditional mask. I think the extra fabric (multiple layers!) and better construction jack up the price of this thing. The front of the mask is much more complex than a regular mask, as well. It’s the widest and tallest sleeping mask I’ve ever tried. It’s as big as wearing a snorkeling mask. Which is nice because the pressure of the front of the mask is distributed around the periphery of the face, forming a “seal” that blocks out all light. And it keeps the part of that mask inside the “seal” boundary lifted off your face, which is REALLY nice, because I hate waking up with sweat and oil and grime all on my face because fabric has been pressing on it all night. And it goes without saying, there’s no pressure on your eyes at all. Because the front of the mask is so dense, it keeps its shape better for a side sleeper like me. Again, this means that the pillow doesn’t deform the mask and press it against my eyeballs; the structure keeps it off my face. It FEELS really premium. Like someone started designing this by sewing two face masks together. The nose part is a different texture, it’s very pillowy and has silk fabric, which allows it to conform to your nose and u8nder-eye area and helps it block out all light from where there’s usually a gap, especially when sleeping on the side. I’ve never had to adjust a mask less than I have with this one, once my head hits the pillow. The downside of this is that the mask is so comfortable, and so effective at blocking out all light, I find myself feeling groggier when I wake up because when my alarm goes off my brain thinks it’s still night time. Beware, because this can mess up your circadian rhythm! But let me tell you, the next time I have to sleep on a plane, or a sunny room without a blackout curtain, I’ll be ready. Hats off to the designers of this thing, because it is really innovative and great. I haven’t tried washing it yet, so that’s the only question left for me: how durable is it? It FEELS really durable, like it could easily be washed again and again in the washing machine (on cold of course, in a delicates bag). But I can’t comment on that yet. This mask thought of everything. I absolutely love how it has a little strip of fabric along the nose cutout so that you don't get a little gap where light seeps through there. The fabric is really soft and feels cool to the touch. The strap connects with a little strip of velcro, which at first I was a bit worried would get caught in my hair. Thankfully, it hasn't got caught once! It fits super well and helps me get a quality night of sleep. My one personal gripe is that there is a little "hole" for your eyes. I personally like sleeping with eyemasks so that there IS pressure against my eyelids and I am forced to keep them closed. Since there's a bit of a gap in this eye mask, I can feel and hear my eyelashes brushing up against the fabric while I try to fall asleep. I would prefer that it were flush against my eyes but it's not a huge deal. It is quite a bit pricier than other eye masks I use; the quality is there though so I definitely think it's worth it.
