This is still the SY album I come back to most. Maybe it's because I don't hear much about it, so I have to dig it out on occasions where I feel the need to do so on my own terms, to remember it as the sort of forgotten gem that it still proves to be. I'm a huge fan of Lee's songs, so it's a bit odd that an album without a lead vocal from him remains a favourite. Still, the dynamic between Kim and Thurston was probably at their then-strongest, with Coco's birth around the corner, and the sensual vibe surrounding almost all fourteen tracks (that still resonates with each current listen) was probably due to this strength. It's fun to remember what was, and to hear Skink and Sweet Shine stand out as some of Kim's best work with the band, just before they entered a rather foggy period, musically speaking (you can talk about how great Washing Machine is all you like, but it still sounds worrisome and murky by comparison), abandoning drum tone and clarity of sound for a few albums. Maybe two albums was all that was needed with Butch Vig's involvement, but I think he really helped to capture a lively, crisp time in the life of Sonic Youth, something I almost never heard again from them on any record , besides the almost-swan song Rather Ripped. this is, i think, a revolutionary album in which the amount of electronics doesnt take away from the beauty of the actual music and their voices. thurston's voice is beautiful as always. the way they harmonize their voices is just amazing and kim's rougly ravishing voice gives you chills all over. i love the way that kim focuses on making darn good music without making her voice "pretty". these are the best most superincumbent artists out there today. i would definitley recommend this to anyone who loves sonic youth because this is such an exceptional album. Self-Obsessed and Sexee, Bull in the Heather, Skink and Waist are my personal favorites. never pass this album up, its just amazing! Read more

This is not my favorite album by Sonic Youth, in fact with the albums that I have it is probably my least favorite but it does have some really good tracks on it, such as: Bull in the Heather, Winner's Blues, Skink, Sweet Shine, Screaming Skull. The other Sonic Youth albums I have are; Daydream Nation(My personal favorite and first Sonic Youth album), Sister, Goo, and Dirty. Read more
