So, as a quick look through the reviews of these socks will reveal, there was a point where Gold Toe was going through a dark phase and failing to produce quality socks. Many of the Fluffies from this era (let's call it 2009-2013) would start falling apart almost immediately, with large threads coming loose and significant holes opening up for no reason (other than the shoddy quality of the materials and workmanship). It was a somber time for those of us that had come to know and love the Gold Toe Fluffie, which is probably alone among dress socks in providing a nice balance of comfort, warmth, dryness, breathability, and sharp looks. The conspicuous decline in quality led to Gold Toe being banished by several department stores that had carried them for decades: they refused to foist defective crap on their customers. That's why so many of the other reviewers have found these socks hard to find in their brick-and-mortar stores. For a while, I sought a replacement brand, but no other could match the Fluffies: the competitors' thicker socks were often too heavy and trapped moisture; others were too thin and provided no impact cushioning or protection from cold and snow. In despair, I tried ordering from Amazon and hoped for the best. It worked out. Gold Toe has heard our complaints and responded -- the socks are now well-built and reliable. I have been looking for the old Gold Toe Fluffies for my husband for years. These are as close as we have come and we'll take it! They are very soft, finally! They do come up higher on his leg, but I noticed he just doesn't pull them up that high - who cares? He has wide feet and they fit, and wide calves to go with them. The only thing these socks are now missing is that they used to have an extra layer of cushioning on the bottom of the foot. I think that might have helped them last longer. Some people have said these get holes in them sooner. They are soft and comfortable though so we're ordering more. They have our vote. Read more

Over the years I've worn these socks in various colors, always in relatively the same blend. I don 't know why it is I look for all or part cotton in almost anything but socks! I like the softness of the blend, how well they wear, and the overall comfort. I thing they exist in both short and long crew form, but I'm fine with both. My only small regret is wishing the browns and the navies had less "black" in them so I could tell the difference easier. But I usually use the white anyway for casual. One small note: I didn't like some of the pilling that occur after many washes, but bought a small inexpensive fabric shaver, and am/was pretty surprised at how well it resolves the problem.
