The Windproof Classic Vintage Trench Lighter feels less like a simple tool and more like a relic from another era. Its retro military-inspired design immediately stands out, giving off a rugged, “battle-tested” personality that makes it as much a collectible as it is a functional lighter. The design is easily its strongest feature. The brass body carries a natural antique look that only gets better with time, developing a unique patina that adds character. Every detail—from the grinding wheel to the mechanical structure—feels intentional and authentic, capturing that old-school soldier aesthetic in a way that doesn’t feel gimmicky. In terms of build quality, it feels solid and dependable in hand. The brass construction gives it a reassuring weight, and the sealing mechanism helps reduce fuel evaporation, which is a common issue with kerosene lighters. It’s built to last, though the evolving patina might not appeal to those who prefer a consistently polished look. Using the lighter is a satisfying experience. The automatic ejection feature adds a mechanical charm that makes lighting it feel engaging rather than routine. The grinding wheel ignition is reliable once you get used to it, though it may require a bit of practice for first-time users. Refilling with kerosene is straightforward, and overall operation feels smooth and deliberate. Where it truly excels is in windproof performance. Even in breezy outdoor conditions, the flame remains steady and dependable. This makes it especially useful for camping, hiking, or any situation where standard lighters tend to struggle. For everyday practicality, it leans slightly more toward enthusiasts than casual users. It’s heavier than disposable options and requires regular refueling, which may not suit everyone. However, for those who appreciate craftsmanship, durability, and vintage style, it offers a uniquely enjoyable experience. Overall, this lighter strikes a strong balance between aesthetics and performance. It’s not just about lighting a flame—it’s about the experience, the design, and the story it feels like it carries. Initially I was very disappointed in this lighter. Bear in mind that the craftsmanship is impeccable, and the packaging impressive, even if this lighter is made in the People's Republic of China (definitely not Switzerland). But the instructions for its use are magnificently terrible. You must watch the video to gain any insight into how to add lighter fluid; otherwise, you'll waste fluid and think that the lighter is faulty. The bottom cap of the lighter unscrews and you can remove a spring. That much is clear from the instructions. If you then attempt to add lighter fluid, you'll only waste it as it simply leaks out. What you must do, while holding the lighter upside down, is to push the slide all the way up towards the uncapped bottom to reveal a second cap, which also must be unscrewed. Removing that cap reveals wick material, to which you can then add lighter fluid. Now the lighter comes with extra flints, which is nice. Packed with the flints is a small, flat, circular tool with protruding edges to act as a sort of screw driver. How is it used? Dunno. Why is it used? Dunno. Also packed with the lighter is a length of red string attached to a long, thin probe. Is that an extra wick? Is it a cleaning device? Dunno. Once prepared the lighter performs as needed to light a pipe or a drip torch or any other thing that doesn't require you to keep some distance. Now that I've figured out how to prime this thing, I am pleased with it. I won't be able to say as much when it comes time to replace the wick. Read more
The Classic Vintage Trench Lighter is truly a unique piece and is exquisitely made. This is a gifting piece for a true artisan and collector of lighters or someone who loves the look and feel of a quality handmade vintage tool. Build quality is solid, the craftsmanship is perfection and it's weight feels satisfyingly comfortable in a man's hand. My husband, a craftsman himself, is impressed with the quality and is delighted to add this to his necessity items while flying across the country in his private plane for work. You never know when you are going to need a lighter to melt wire casings for a quick fix on machinery, melt the end of a nylon rope, start a fire if stranded, etc. Having him travel with this heavy duty reliable lighter gives me comforting n knowing no matter what the weather conditionsor situations he finds himself in, he'll always have a fire source to stay warm. If you are looking for a gift for someone who values unique, quality built, usable tools with character and a bit of nostalgia, this lighter is the perfect gift for them. It's fuel capacity makes this highly functional for daily use. Price point is fair considering the quality handmade workmanship. Read more
I've always been a Zippo guy, but I decided to get this just to branch out. I'm not even kidding when I say this instantly became the favorite of my collection! It was a little smaller than expected from the photos, but fits perfectly in the hand (and pocket). Comes with extra flints, a nifty little sack for it, and an instruction manual... Which, honestly, you don't even need because of the beautiful simplicity of its operation. It's a very solid, well made metal lighter! Thoren's did an amazing job with this reproduction, and this lighter is so nice, I regret giving up smoking for the first time in a decade! Still, it's going to go with me on every camping trip now, both for the functionality and because it's a conversation starter. Very pleased with it! Read more
