Great drives, depending on the seller

SNNovember 4, 2025

I will not purchase from MD Tech again, and I would advise everyone to stay clear. The review is still 5-star because the original drives from a different seller are great. I've had mixed experiences with these drives. The first two that I ordered were great, worked with no issues whatsoever and have been running basically non-stop for years now. The second pair I ordered from MD Tech (to switch from RAID 0 to R10) were not recognized by my UEFI. Thought it might be a cable issue, so I pulled one of the originals that was working perfectly, and plugged in the new drive to the same cables, still not recognized. Tried the old drive with the new cables just to be sure it wasn't a bad connection that fried the drive or something, old drive worked fine. This happened with both of the newer drives. Read more

Robust Storage with a Few Caveats

DodgeNovember 22, 2024

I've been using the HGST WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB Data Center HDD (Renewed) for a few months now, and here's my honest take on it. Pros: Massive Storage: With 14TB of space, this drive can handle an impressive amount of data. Whether you're running a data center or just need a ton of personal storage, this HDD has got you covered. Performance: The 6Gb/s SATA interface provides solid data transfer speeds. I've noticed that large file transfers and backups are relatively quick, which is crucial for my needs. Reliability: Despite being a renewed product, it has been running smoothly without any hiccups. The HGST brand has a good reputation for durability and reliability, and this drive lives up to that standard. Cons: Noise Level: This HDD is a bit noisier than I'd like. During heavy read/write operations, there's a noticeable hum. It's not a deal-breaker, but if you're sensitive to noise, it might be something to consider. Heat Generation: It does run a bit warm. I've had to ensure proper ventilation in my setup to avoid overheating issues. Investing in a good cooling system might be a good idea if you plan to use this drive extensively. Renewed Product: While mine has been working fine, there's always a bit of a gamble with renewed products. Make sure to check the seller's return policy just in case. Overall, the HGST WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB HDD offers excellent value for its storage capacity and performance. It's especially great if you're on a budget and need a high-capacity solution. Just keep in mind the potential for noise and heat, and you should be good to go! Read more

FIRE HAZARD DO NOT BUY

Kyle AlbaneseAugust 17, 2018

Nearly burned my house down! These drives don’t power on from a standard sata power connector and require a special molex to sata connector. No big deal I thought, plug it in and what happens? The computer chassis immediately turns glowing red and smoke is pouring out of every fan. I moved as quickly as I could to pull the power cord out of the back but before I could it has fried my motherboard (maybe the cpu and memory too, not sure yet) and the power supply. Not to mention my whole house smells like a electrical fire. I’m sure I’ll get a refund on the drives but what about the computer you just torched? Update: 8/17 - Company has promptly contacted me, issued refund, and is investigating the photos and damage before calling back to update me on any other information. Out of fairness to them for so quickly promptly contacting me directly I'll continue updating this review with progress from the company 8/19: They’ve issued a refund but have been entirely radio silent about covering the cost of the new computer I have to build since their fault part torched mine. Update 8/28: shipped those clunkers back, but just to update the company will issue a maximum damage benefit of $250. So if risking your computer, office, home or other property potentially burning down is worth $250 in amazon credit then by all means go ahead and get these. For the record I purchased both, and BOTH were defective, the support rep said in thousands of drives this had never happened but I had two drive failures in one box. I tested the second one in a different environment with a different power supply and it also instantly shorted out and started smoking. The support rep was very pleasant but ultimately couldn’t help replace everything and who has the time to for that hassle Read more

Great deal, great drives

SkironJuly 22, 2025

Bought 2. The drives were individually packed and sealed in electrostatic bag. No signs of use, so externally like new. They were used for 6.5 years based on S.M.A.R.T log, no errors in the log (i don't know if those can be cleared) max temp on one was 61'C and 48'C on the other. Did read only scan using badblacks software and no errors reported. I think it's a good deal, they are silent, you can hear the head moves but the spin is silent. I think (personal philosophy) that is better to buy used high quality enterprise grade drive than cheap brand new of general user one from last say Seagate. Those are Japanese designed, made in Thailand. The SMART also reported 100% helium. Read more
