Pricey But Fantastic Drives For Home Users - Works Flawlessly With Legacy Drive Cases!
OK, I'm the first reviewer here and will clear up TONS of searching and misinformation I had to do before buying- and finally take the plunge. I'm a home computer user only with huge uncompressed picture files, etc. etc. and decades of date scattered everywhere - time to clean up! The listing page on Amazon is as misleading as you can get - for servers only? I don't have one and this isn't correct. These work great with a home system using a mac mini 2012 and an external drive box. I've used G-Drives forever but finally bought a 5 bay Mobius thunderbolt drive enclosure right here on Amazon and they work great with it. The only thing you have to be sure about is that the drives DO NOT HAVE THE POWER DISABLE FUNCTION - this one (of27604) does not. There's a .pdf brochure from HGST that tells you which ones do or don't - you can't just buy the least expensive one (at least of the HGST Helium drives) - for legacy boxes like the Mobius you can't have the power disable feature. Cost aside, 'enterprise' drives aside, I can tell you I now have two of these (redundancy as JBOD setup - not RAID) that I put in, powered up, formatted with Disk Utility, and have been off and running transferring over terabytes of data. They work and transfer data as fast and as well as any 3.5 inch bare drive I've ever used. Why in the work the Amazon page states that these drives won't work for home users baffles me and is flat incorrect. Just get the proper drive production number for legacy boxes and you're off and running! Hope this helps. Read more
