It was easy to put together with the numbered parts and did not leave any such 'gaps' on the table top, nor anywhere else. I'm very Happy with my purchase and it's just perfect for small spaces. I have mine right under my bedroom window and it fits in like a charm. It is the perfect height and length that I was looking for; and I feel very spoiled being able to keep all of my important books, water, small baskets of pain cream, lotion, perfume, remote control, etc. right within my reach.
