This seems to be a high quality, very hard steel hone. You cannot sharpen a dull blade with these. You can only hone an already fairly sharp blade. After using this hone I use a ceramic honing rod which is even finer and makes it razor sharp. Read more

This is a knockoff of a steel that's considered the best in the business. One of the line cooks where I work came in with one, and when he told me the price, I had to get one for myself to compare to the original. I've had it for about seven months now, and in a commercial kitchen, equipment life is measured in dog years. So far, it still looks pretty much new, and overall it's about 90% of the original, at about 30% of the price. Putting that in perspective, 90% of a F******* D*** steel is still head and shoulders above just about any other steel available. You can spend a lot more and not get close to the performance of this steel. It has become my go-to recommendation for young cooks looking for a good quality affordable steel. I still prefer the real one, but for the price, this is a great deal. It will perform better than most of the big name brands (W, H, S, G, KO, M, D, etc) and it should last years, even in a commercial environment. Read more

I've always done my best to keep a sharp edge on my cutlery because it's easier to work in the kitchen and actually safer. I used whetstones starting back in the 70's and finally progressed to an electric sharpener about 15 years ago. I also used a number of handheld sharpeners and honing steels. Then I watched a video from a chef and found out that these knife sharpening rods are far more efficient when used properly. This sharpening rod by Huusk met all the requirements (price, length, grit fineness, etc) and I was very impressed by how quickly it brought my knives to an extremely fine edge. Yes, you must maintain the proper blade angle while sharpening each side, so there is a learning curve, but it's not that difficult if you take your time. Some buyers have commented on how the handle can be slippery when it's wet. OK, it might, but why on earth would you be sharpening your knives with wet hands? I highly recommend this product!
