Since I am in the USA I cannot view this particular DVD, however, I saw Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction when it originally aired on the Discovery Channel, and have since been able to watch it several times since I saved it on my Tivo. This docu-drama seamlessly weaves the known facts and the personal diaries into a moving narrative that has you sitting on the edge of your seat until the end. What a wonderful way to learn of this devastating event. Read more
Krakatoa's explosion was one of the most devastating explosions recorded in History. The movie is beautiful because it brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who had survived this exposion in 1883. The Bevernick Family was one of those there at the time who had gone through this. Johanna Bevernick's account is known around the world as is Captain Johan Linderman. Krakatoa had been building up in activity even before the everything started on August 26, 1883. It had devastating effect on the entire globe. By time August 26 hit it entered its paroxysmal phase. They were heard every 10 minutes. This Documentary shows the devastating effects a powerful volcano like Krakatoa can do if it erupts. It shows the effects of things from Ash to even a Pyroclastic Surge. Pyroclastic Surge = A fluid mass of turbulent gas and rock fragments which is ejected during volcanic erputions. They are slimilar to Pyroclastic Flows accept they have a higher proportion of gas to rock particles. The Flows generate the Surges. It is "lighter" then the flow so it can travel fast at speds of 350 mph carrying massive distructive kinetic energy and can climb higher gorund. They can be "hot" containing gas and steam at temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius [212 degrees Fahrenheit] to as much as 800 [1472]. They can also be cold with tempatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Aside this, they can be leathal depending on the gas they carry. This documentary shows this and what they are able to do. Krakatoa had also caused the loudest explosion in History and was heard as far away as Perth, Australia. Its sound pressure level was approximentaly 180 dBSPL at a distances of 100 miles [160 km]. The human threshold for pain is at 134 dBSPL and short term effect hearing damage can oocur at 120 dBSPL. Captain Linderman is one of those Journals who is told in this doucmentary. He had experianced one of the most dangerous Tsunamis that was seen. He had also been battling the ash that had landed on his deck because it is more dangerous then lighting that was occuring at the time. He was reward the Cross of Gold by the Dutch Authorities for save those on board the ship. He died 2 years later while The offical death toll by Dutch Authorities was recorded 36,417 although some sources had said there were more then 120,000 people who died. There are documentary reports of human skeletons floating up on the east cost of Africa up to a year after the explosion. Average Global tempatures also were affected by the explosion and dropped as low as 1.2 degree Celsius and did not return to normal 'till 1888. Robert Verbeek was one of those Scientists that were near the volcano at the time of the explosion. His documentary became the basis of Volcanology. He gave detailed accounts of the cycle of a Volcanos explosion. It destroyed 165 costal villages as well. As for Krakatoa not much was left after the explosion. 18-21 km was blown away. But in 1927, new activity formed and from where it once stood a new volcano has been formed. This is called "Anak Krakatoa" ["Son of Krakatoa"]. It is growing by 5 meters every year. This is a well worth documentary of one of the most devastating explosions recorded in History. Krakatoa's explosion, effects, and aftermath is one of the most in depth documenteries out there recorded in the Journals of four of the survivors as well as scientists like Robert Verbeek. It was one of my favourites to watch on Discovery Channel. If you want to learn more about Krakatoa or what Volcanos can do I well recommend this product. Read more
I watched this years ago on National Geographic. Incredibly well done and the best Krakatoa documentary of them allβ¦.hands down. Only wish we could get it in the states, would love to see it again. On a scale of 1-10, Iβd give it a 15 Read more

We saw this on the National Geograpic channel. It's based on the memoirs of the wife of a Dutch official, and those of a few others who were direct witnesses to the catastrophe. It brings in a lot of information about the volcano itself, and the events leading up to the eruption. It follows several different characters, the Dutch woman, a ship's captain who was piloting his boat during the eruption, a scientist who saw the warning signs, but didn't recognize them, and the wife of a lighthouse keeper. The story was fascinating, terrifying, and well done. Read more
