Works & Looks Great & Eliminates Clutter!

When I installed a Ceramic Tile Kitchen Backsplash I upgraded to more modern switches and outlets. I purchased the Leviton T5832-T USB Charger/Tamper-Resistant Duplex Receptacle, 20-Amp, Light Almond. Love the convenience! No more juggling the chargers to make a couple fit into 1 outlet. Eliminates clutter of chargers and cords, so the countertop always looks neat. We almost always have a cell phone and Alexa or other electrical devices plugged in. The Leviton T5832-T USB Charger/Tamper-Resistant Duplex Receptacle, 20-Amp performs flawlessly with no issues charging our iPhones and powering appliances. While I have never "timed" the charge it seems no different than the Apple charger that came with the phones. Another Plus, the 20 Amp rating allows Waffle Irons, Coffee Makers to be plugged in without concerns for overloading the circuit for peace of mind as well. Instructions are included and Installation was easy. Considering more for beside the beds and bathroom counters. Read more

Awesome outlet and charger, but the size of the unit can be problematic.

While I did give this 5 stars because A) it looks and works fantastic. Holy cow I never charged my phone so fast. There are a few things to be careful about. I installed this in my new kitchen island and if you are installing this into a metal pinch box, be aware that you will have to "modify" the outlet a little. The plastics offsets will not allow it to fit into the box and even if you do get it to slide in, the outlet is so large it is difficult to route the wires around the unit to the screws. Originally we were going to do the typical jump from this outlet to the next, but there was no way we could fit another set of 20amp wires in the box. The devil is always in the details. If you are going to use these, make sure you plan ahead better than I did and use the largest box you can find. Read more

Review-busters - Read for accuracy in reviewing....

As usual, inexperience and incompetence strikes again for many of the poor reviews. That's why I write the reviews that I write. I shall begin busting poor reviews and provide truth in reviewing....Where do I start? Below are actual reviewer comments...I'll first start by saying I have years of electrical trade experience. That helps, but isn't a requirement. (1) "Sockets too tight" or "I have a hard time plugging in regular plugs to the sockets". The receptacles (sorry, not "sockets") are "TR"...that means TAMPER RESISTANT. That means it takes some maneuvering of the blades for them to be inserted into the receptacle, hence, preventing a child from "tampering" with it and easily inserting say a paperclip. Tamper Resistant receptacles require that you slightly slide the blades to the right as you are inserting them and push aside the tamper guard. Technique is everything. (2) "It didn't come with a plate". Firstly, there is no wall plate pictured and secondly the description states "wall plate sold separately". Multiple reasons it's not included: People may be using a different color wall plate or ones that are brass, brushed, chrome, decorative, etc. Or in some cases depending on what type of receptacle you are replacing, you can use the previous face plate. Including a wall plate that won't be used is a waste. Also, they're only 89 cents. (3) "It's too wide" or "it doesn't fit box". Ok, they added USB charging ports. More room is needed for these components...BUT the receptacle will legally fit in a box, meaning if INSTALLED CORRECTLY, it will not touch the walls of a single gang box or won't touch another switch or receptacle if placed in a multi-gang box. Now, if your box is crowded with other circuits or if someone left too much wire slack and jammed everything in, you may have an issue fitting this. Did I mention "if installed correctly?" (4) Too hard to install. This is subjective, BUT....If you ordered a 20 amp version of this, it is presumably because you knew it is being used on a 20 amp circuit. That means the wires are a heavier gauge and stiffer than those used on a 15 amp circuit, so yes, it may be a bit more difficult to install. Knowing how to gently fold the wires and leave only a sufficient amount of slack is key. (5) "wires don't stay under the terminals"...This means you are doing something wrong. Only one wire may be installed on either side of the screw. If you have two of each color wires, you will need to individually insert them under the clamp, one on either side of the screw. I properly striped each conductor and they fit securely under each terminal without pulling out. Do not confuse these with "back-wire" receptacles. These are "side-wire" and use a clamp - it is not the same as the lazy method of back-wiring, which is frowned-upon by better electricians. (6) "the outlet sits 1/4 inch lower in the box than the adjacent one". This one was a real winner...The face of the receptacle is industry standard. The "yoke" is industry standard. The screw-spacing is industry-standard. However, the photo provided by a certain incompetent review shows a warp in the box, which is common to nail-on boxes installed with little care or ability. It also shows the receptacles (purposely?) misaligned to exaggerate the claim. The receptacle mounting holes have wider slots to allow for adjustment/alignment of the receptacles to compensate for slightly crooked box installations. I guarantee I could've adjusted the receptacles in the example to fit perfectly with a little effort. That example was someone having an ax to grind. Some people shouldn't be performing certain tasks. (7) "Can't plug everything in at once"...Well you can if you have basic types of plugs like lamps, laptops, a coffee maker, etc. If you have bulky transformers or other oversized plugs that cover the USB ports, well then OF COURSE you can't fit everything! You need this explained to you? (8) You do NOT need a separate pair of wires to make the USB ports work! No idea why someone would provide such blatant misinformation. The USB ports take power from the primary hot and neutral feeds. This was erroneously reported by another reviewer that is supposed to be of higher caliber. Other notes and recommendations....Make sure you know the amperage of the circuit you are installing this on. It's the number listed on the breaker that controls the circuit. Without getting into the code too deep, a good rule of thumb is 15 amp circuits require you to order a 15 amp receptacle, 20 amp circuits should have a 20 amp receptacle. Yes, there are exceptions to this but for most situations, I suggest following that guideline. Know if you need to order a wall plate. If you are replacing a classic style duplex receptacle and your wall plate has two separate holes for the receptacles, you will need a new wall plate. If you are replacing a receptacle that has a single rectangular opening, the old plate will work. These use standard "Decora" type receptacle covers available everywhere. Also note it is normal for this receptacle to stick-out past the wall plate about an 1/8". NOTE: I purchased this item on Amazon for full price and have no affiliation to the seller. I try to write helpful, unbiased and insightful reviews because I also read reviews prior to making my own buying decisions. I notice many reviews lack helpful information, are not well written or give poor reviews based on not reading directions, failing to read the product details prior to purchasing or someone's inexperience or lack of skill. Writing valuable reviews helps pay it forward. Read more

This fit fairly well into the box and was very easy to install. This thing charges FAST!. I installed it on my kitchen counter and does a great job of keeping my families phones charges and ready to go. It looks a bit industrial for the kitchen counter but works great. Read more

Just barely fit in outlet box

The outlet is quite deep because of the transformer and just fit in the outlet box. Works as described. Just be careful ordering if you have a lot of wire connections in your box. Read more

Love it despite the difficulty installing

I've installed my 1st one so I hope my lessons learn speeds the next one. The wiring in my outlet of choice was heavy duty because of the numerous other stuff on the circuit. So, power off, remove & disconnect old outlet, then wire new Leviton outlet. If you think I've got it made, you'd make the same mistake I did. Because these are bigger outlets it didn't appreciate being shoved into my small looking box. It was at this point that I exerted enough energy that sweat started down my face. I think there were 2 causes & both worked against me: the very stiff wire & the larger box. The wire liked having the extra room it had previously and the larger box required a lot of force to get the darn thing to seat fully. It did help to get the screws started then push it into place to fully seat. My difficulty may not be what you encounter & I hope the next one is easier. Read more

Great way to add USB without needing a wall wart

I replaced a couple outlets with these switches so I can get USB without needing the adapter. The only complaint I have is that you cannot use these if the outlet is "switched". Meaning if one side of the outlet is tied to a light switch you cannot use this outlet, or you will give up the switched capability. The outlet is a little fatter than the standard outlet but it still fit into the electrical box and was very straight forward to install. Be sure to turn off power at the breaker box before you install. No sense in electrocuting yourself. Read more
