In my experience, this is by far the best eyeliner on the market! It goes on precisely and doesn’t smear. It is a true black that doesn’t look ashy or gray. The brush is fabulous and applies the product like a dream. I used this product for many years but L’Oreal has replaced it with a gel mechanical pencil, which is not nearly as precise or pigmented. This is the best drugstore line brand of black gel/cream eyeliner I've tried (*trust me, I'm a beauty blogger & amateur makeup artist who's been doing makeup and working with different products for over 20 years) at the $15 and under prices point. There are other very good ones out there at this price point, but for the deepness of pigment, I cannot find another PURE JET BLACK (midnight black? blackest black? what's the current correct name of the deepest, darkest possible black shade out there for makeup? Whatever it is, this item is IT!) gel/cream eyeliner like this one. The pigment level is the deepest I've seen, and does not fade in any way once the product dries after application. It also does not fade or lose intensity in any way over the course of its being worn. Normally, if I use a black gel/cream liner on myself or a client, I will then go over it with a liquid liner to intensify the color. That extra step of the 2nd coat of liquid liner is not necessary in any way when using this Loreal gel/cream eyeliner: the line you get from it is deep, dark and glossy enough to emulate the effect of a traditional liquid eyeliner over gel liner. As far as the texture of the formula: it is smooth, and goes on easily (either with the included brush or with another brush of choice; I've tried many with it and all work well). In addition, I have found that if capped tightly after each use this gel/cream doesn't seem to dry out as fast as some other brands' similar products do (which helps save $$). The brush also comes with a handy snap on/snap off cap that you can continue to use after your first opening (not just to keep it safe in transit & until you first open it). The brush quality is also very high, with evenly cut bristles and a design that allows you to apply a clean, precise line without being overly wasteful of how much product is picked up by the brush & stuck in the bristles. I've tried MAC, Bobbi Brown, Pop, Pixi, and e.l.f. cream/gel eyeliners, and for a long time Bobbi was the only thing I'd use. However, I tried this product on a whim (austerity measures) and it will likely be my staple for a while. Here's the breakdown: * In the jar it appears to be a lighter (redder?) shade of brown, but the "espresso" color actually goes on much richer than browns that MAC or e.l.f. carry. It is a little bit lighter than Bobbi Brown's espresso, but when applied it still appears black except on very close inspection. * The consistency is very creamy, especially compared to Bobbi Brown or Pixi, making it easier to get on the brush, although slightly more difficult to apply without smudging. * Despite being so creamy, it sets very quickly, doesn't run or smear at all, and barely fades after a long (sweaty) day. * I've been using it for a few weeks and it hasn't dried up at all (unlike Pixi or Pop potted eyeliners I've tried). * I've had no eye irritation. * The brush it comes with is surprisingly good; I still prefer the shape of MAC or Bobbi eyeliner brushes over this one, but I really like that it comes with a cap that keeps it from getting destroyed. I have used many of the cream/pot eyeliners which I like far better than pencil or liquid forms. I have liked this better than most so far. The positive: It is super soft and creamy and does not dry out or crumble through the entire container as some do. Once dry, it stays in place and lasts throughout the day although I do apply a similar color shadow over it after it dries which probably helps. The negative: The texture is a cream bordering on a liquid which makes it more difficult to apply and not make a mess which is impossible to just 'spot' remove this stuff after it's on. A cotton swab with remover is the only way to clean it up. All said, although it is not perfect and requires finesse and a steady hand and mistakes don't clean up without remover, I like it better for the positive reasons and will continue to use it until I find something better anyway. I purchased this in 2021 for almost 9 bucks. Then in 2023 for 16 and now for 29 in 2025. I am still using the one I purchased in 2021. The eye liner lasts a long time. I dont use make up daily but it still really great as you only need a tiny amount for a dark line. I however have lost the brushes and the brushes are worth the 30 dollars in my opinion. They are soft and give you the most perfect line. The size of the brush is perfect for the eye and unlike other brushes its super soft so it makes a smooth line. I usually use a small amount of white eye shadow underneath it for an extra pop of color. It really is waterproof. You can shower with it and it wont run. However, if you rub your face there is a chance it will run. I have slept in it and wont budge while sleeping. If you are thinking whether its worth it, yes, yes its worth it. I have tried other gel liners and other brushes and I keep going back to this one. Also, I am a pretty basic make up person. I am a moisturizer, powder for coverage, liner and mascara type of girl. So I dont have a lot of experience but what I do know, this is a great product! Read more
