Noisiest hard drive ever and I have had lots. Sounds like a box of rocks. But it keeps on going. Luckily, it is in a remote place in the house. Installed in a surveilance dvr. Surveilance systems are very rough on drives. Knocked it down one star for the noise. Had it for 4 months now. Read more

I'm not familiar with MaxDigitalData in the HDD market, but decided to pick this up anyway because of the pricing, and because I needed a surveillance drive for an NVR/NAS. The drive is recognized as a Hitachi, and I'm not sure if that means just the HDD controller is a Hitachi chipset, or if the entire drive is Hitachi based. But after the whole Hitachi "Deathstar" Deskstar debacle, and subsequent purchase of Hitachi by Western Digital, Hitachi upped their game. And in my experience, started making really reliable drives that only performed slightly worse than it's competitors, and usually did so at an undercut price. But one things for sure, the drive sounds like a good ol' loud and clunky Hitachi. And if it's recognized as a Hitachi, and sounds like a Hitachi, it probably is a Hitachi. And if it is a Hitachi, it will probably be just reliable enough not to be disappointing with it's sub-par seek rate and transfer speeds. Considering the price, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a new-old-stock drive from the "Deathstar" era, just with a more modern HDD controller. Only time will tell, but, so far, so good. Read more

Just picked it up today and installed as soon as I get home. It’s working perfectly with no problems. I was not certain it would work as it’s different from the original drive in my Annke system. It had a 1 TB Toshiba drive that conked out after 4 years or so. I tried a used Toshiba drive but it wasn’t any better than the old one. This seems to be a suitable replacement at a very reasonable cost. Time will tell how long it lasts, as the system is on 24/7. Good so far. Read more
