I use one at a time interchangeably and I must say that they last about 4hrs each side, which is pretty cool. I listen to my favorite YouTube podcast creator and they usually do long videos, so it pleases me to be able to listen for minimum 4hrs. When you put the earbuds in the case, they light up as an indicator that you've placed them correctly and they are charging. You can shut them off separately and I love that.
