My wife and I love oysters. For her birthday, I scheduled once-a-month fresh-oyster shipments from the East Coast for several months, which meant I became the family oyster shucker. Before this, we generally enjoyed them at restaurants. Customers who are thinking of ordering overnight-shipped oysters may want to carefully shop around before ordering this kit, because some regular providers of this service will include a kit like this in their first shipment as an incentive. That was not the case with the providers we chose, which was fine. So, I went on Amazon and got this kit, which is pretty standard, it turns out. I'm actually able to attest to the value of these cut-resistant gloves, because I managed to stab my "holding hand" good and hard with one of the oyster knives and, while it left a little bruise, it did not pierce the glove or my skin. Whew! Without the glove, I'd have been heading to urgent care for a few stitches, I'm sure. The knives are standard, solid oyster knives. This set comes with a yellow rubber oyster holder, but my orientation to this showed how to do it with hands, gloves and an old towel and that's what I prefer to use. So, for me, yes, the yellow rubber device is included, but I don't use it. Shucking oysters is an effort! Preparing a dozen for supper takes a bit of muscle, practiced technique and sweat and is not for the sore-of-wrist or frail-of-hand to attempt. You're literally breaking the connecting point of these very tough, hard shells and then wiggling the knife blade forward until the top shell comes off. Takes a bit of learning and effort! If you're game for it, and at this point I'm now a veteran, this is a great kit to purchase. Reasonably priced, too. Read more

So professional and worth every penny! You can go to your local grocery store like Publix in Florida, buy a dozen live fresh oysters for $1.09 each and have a feast at your home sweet home. The “knives” are precise enough to open them but not sharp enough to cut you when washing them by hand. High quality gloves provided and special cloth for protection while you open the oysters. A silicone lemon squeezer is provided as well to prevent seeds getting into the shells. Super fancy. No more going to a restaurant paying $27 for a dozen oysters for me (plus tax). No way! Read more

Got the set & immediately shucked 12 oysters with ease. The knives fit well in my hand & are strong. The gloves & cloth gave me much more confidence in getting the job done properly and without injury. I’d buy this again. Read more

Pro: fairly good bargain since you get 2 knives, 2 gloves, a soft cloth/pad, and and lemon squeezer. Con: The knives are a bit weak. They are decently thick and sturdy, but if the oyster is too tough to open, the knives actually start bending! Almost as if they are going to snap if I go too far. Also, the handle size is a bit small. I wish it had a wider grip to get more torque when you're twisting the knife. My take: If I could go back, I would not buy this. Instead, I would invest some money into amazing oyster knives that are more sturdy since that's all you're worrying about when you're trying to get into those delicious oysters. Gloves are nice but could be bought separately. You don't need the lemon squeezer. I usually just use a lemon press to squeeze juice into a bowl beforehand, which is more efficient and less messy anyway. Read more
