I was originally contemplating returning these balls because they are very hard. However, I am so glad that I persevered and did not. In fact, I would NOT want them any softer. These things really work, whether it is treating a bad back, muscle spasms, pulled muscle, muscles, tight, shoulders, etc. Relief is immediate and it is because they are so hard that they work. My husband had knee surgery and we use this ball to stimulate and circulate the other leg since he is unable to walk unassisted. Ther different sizes are perfect and it also works on the neck and shoulders too. Material is hard plastic but it's solid and sturdy.
