Good quality brush pen!

Anthony CarabelloDecember 8, 2025✓ Verified purchase

Purchased this brush pen many years ago and hardly used it but the ink still flows perfectly. It’s a very nice pen. I just wish I used it more often. I believe the bristles are made from nylon and the pen itself is plastic. Read more

Versatility and Portability

WilstyApril 24, 2012✓ Verified purchase

The Pentel Pocket Brush Pen is an outstanding piece of art-making equipment. Up until I received this pen, I mainly stuck with using a standard rolling-ball pen for my ink work (I'm not very traditional and don't use a pen and an ink well very often). After having used this pen for a few days, I can say that I shall not be returning to my original standard much more. This brush pen allows for a large variety of mark making. A variety that can be increased even more by using paper with different textures. The ink flows freely and easily. As of yet, I've had no problems with leakage of any sort, which makes it pretty portable from my point of view. One thing about this package, I should warn, is that the title misled me. With this "Pentel Arts Pocket Brush Pen with Refills, 1 Pen and 2 Refills" you are getting the one pen and two cartridges. There isn't one already in the pen which means you're going to use one of your "refills" immediately. And if you draw a lot, pick up a pack of refills to go along with it. Also, once you install the ink, give the ink a minute or two to flow into the bristles. It won't work right away, so be patient. My inspiration for getting this pen is from viewing the artwork of Yoji Shinkawa (Metal Gear Solid, Zone of the Enders). I really admired the varied strokes, line quality, and the confidence behind them. After having read an interview conducted with him, he highly recommended this pen. Hopefully, in a year or two, the bristles will wear out a bit and my line work will vary even more (I like a crappy brush, makes for some really characteristic line work). -Bottom line- If you're looking for a pen to help you build confidence in your line work (use that white out for highlights ;) ) while giving you a seemingly infinite variety of marks to make, this pen is for you. This is an excellent pen and this reviewer highly recommends it. Read more

Great brush pen using waterproof pigment ink

Chris SalazarOctober 20, 2016✓ Verified purchase

This brush pen by pentel is the classic refillable tool loved by many.. and for good reason. This pen comes with two ink cartridges in the package, is lightweight, simple to use and refill, and the lines it produces on paper are great. Like many have stated, it does have a learning curve unless you have a lot of practice using brushes for line work but once you are accustomed to applying pressure to your advantage and controlling the point, this tool becomes more than what it seems. I can create delicate thin lines to bold thick lines all with one item. and best of all, you can even refill the cartridges yourself or purchase the relatively inexpensive refills. The ink is a pigment based black ink that is waterproof when dry! that means you can use this for line work under other wet media like watercolors or inks without your lines smudging. To refill a cartridge yourself just grab a blunt ended syringe (these are not sharp and some are sold for use with cosmetics or refilling printer/pen inks) and some pen-safe black ink. I use Dr. Ph martins hi carb ink as it contains no varnish or shellac which would dry and clog the brush. simply draw up some ink into the syringe, fill the empty cartridge then place it back into the pen. that simple. I own a few other brush tipped pens from pentel and this one is just as loved as the rest. Would recommend if you are looking for a good brush pen using pigment ink. Read more

Flawed, but the best cartridge brush pen out there right now....

E. JohnsonApril 9, 2014✓ Verified purchase

The best part about this particular brush pen is that the tip is indeed a brush made up of synthetic hairs. Others will call themselves brush pens but the tip will be a tapering cone of magic marker style material (some of them are excellent, but there are many inking effects that can not be achieved with a foam cone). It doesn't leak or dry out if it's capped, and refills are fairly easy to find. The cartridges last a decent amount of time, but you will want to keep a spare on hand as they run dry with little warning. Because the ink is coming from a cartridge the flow is fixed and can't be adjusted by squeezing. Getting ideal line quality means feeling the pace of the ink flow. The quality of line will never compare to a good (series 7 style) watercolor brush dipped in your ink of choice, but the big draw here is portability and zero set up and take down time. Personally this pen was a big deal to me. After several disappointing experiences this was a great find and I've been inking much much more since discovering it last year. Dry brush effects are hard to intentionally achieve because of the reservoir and easy to unintentionally achieve if you are moving too fast. The other major compromise is that the ink is somewhat glossy after drying and only the future knows how lightfast the ink is. Much as I love it I'd be happy to upgrade to something else if I found something better but the fact is it's the best out there. Some other brushes certainly compliment it, but nothing I've found can completely replace You can easily achieve professional level results with it as long as you treat it like a brush and not a ball point pen (seems obvious but you should rotate the paper and not the pen tip). It does favor a quick wet style (like Paul Pope) and is a great deal of fun to use. The Black Pentel Color Brush Pen is also excellent, you squeeze it and the ink is much sexier. The only issue is you just can't get a fine enough line with it. The Pilot Petit 3 is also great, but is one of those foam cone tips and behaves more like a variable rapidograph than a brush pen. Simply the best.

This is seriously one of the best pens I have ever used. The brush is so smooth and the ink just flows so well. You will use it, so get some refills. Read more
